Four post lift runway width is the single most common measurement question we field before an install, and it’s usually asked one call too late — after the lift has already been ordered. Getting the runway width wrong means wide trucks that won’t center up, dual-rear-wheel pickups that overhang the rails, or a bay that’s suddenly too tight to walk around the vehicle. What “Standard” Runway Width Actually Means

Most residential and light-commercial four post lifts ship with a runway width somewhere between 12 and 14 inches per rail, measured rail-to-rail on the inside. That inner dimension is what determines whether a vehicle’s tires sit centered on the deck or crowd the edge. When people ask us about four post lift runway width, they’re usually really asking one of two things: will my truck’s tires fit inside the rails, or will my truck’s mirrors and doors clear the lift’s outer columns. Those are different measurements, and both matter.

The rail spacing itself — the distance between the two runways, not the width of each individual runway — is usually a separate spec, often listed as “drive-through width” or “between columns.” We see people confuse these two numbers constantly. A Rotary or BendPak spec sheet will list overall width, drive-through width, and runway width separately, and it’s worth asking us to walk through all three before you commit to a model, especially if your bay has support posts or a narrow overhead door.

Why Runway Width Matters More for Trucks Than Cars

A passenger car with a stock tire width rarely has trouble on a standard runway. The problems show up with full-size pickups, dual-rear-wheel trucks, and lifted vehicles with wider aftermarket wheels. Dual-rear-wheel trucks in particular need either a wider runway or specific DRW-rated ramps, because the outer tire can hang past the edge of a standard rail. We’ve had Iowa fleet customers call us after buying a lift online only to discover their service trucks don’t center properly, and retrofitting extended runways after installation is far more expensive than ordering the right width up front.

If your shop services a mix of sedans and one-ton trucks, we generally recommend sizing the runway width for your widest regular vehicle, not your average one. It costs less to have a little extra margin on a compact car than to turn away a dual-rear-wheel truck because the lift can’t safely support it centered on the deck. This is a conversation worth having with us before you order, since we can match runway width to your actual customer mix rather than a generic spec sheet number.

Runway Width vs. Overall Lift Footprint

It’s easy to focus only on runway width and forget that the columns sit outside the runways, adding to the total footprint. A lift with a modest runway width can still have a wide overall footprint once you account for the four posts and any safety legs. We always ask for actual bay dimensions — floor to ceiling, wall to wall, and door clearance — before recommending a specific runway width, because the number on the spec sheet only tells part of the story of whether a lift fits your space.

How We Measure Before You Buy

When we quote a four post lift for an Iowa shop, we ask for photos, floor plans, or an in-person walk-through whenever possible. We’re checking ceiling height, column obstructions, and door swing alongside runway width, because a lift that’s perfect on paper can still be wrong for a bay with a low HVAC duct or an off-center support column. This upfront measuring saves everyone a headache — installers included — compared to discovering a mismatch on install day.

There’s no rule that every lift in your shop needs identical specs, and matching runway width to each bay’s actual use is usually smarter than standardizing everything to one number.

Adjustable and Extended Runway Options

Some four post models offer extended or adjustable runway width options, particularly on commercial-grade Rotary and Challenger lines built for heavier and wider vehicles. These aren’t universal across every model, so if you know you’ll regularly service dual-rear-wheel trucks or wide commercial vans, tell us that up front so we can point you toward a lift engineered for it rather than trying to force a standard-width unit to work. Buying the wider-capable version from the start almost always costs less than trying to modify runway width later.

Common Mistakes We See With Runway Width

The most common mistake is ordering based on the vehicle currently in the shop rather than the vehicles that will roll through over the lift’s 15-plus year lifespan. Fleets change, shops take on new contracts, and a lift bought for sedans today may need to handle trucks in five years. The second common mistake is ignoring runway width entirely and focusing only on weight capacity — a lift can be rated for the right tonnage and still have a runway too narrow for the tires you’re actually running.
