Why a Four Post Lift Safety Check Matters More Than People Think

Four post lifts feel simple compared to a two post – the vehicle just drives up onto runways and sits there. That simplicity is exactly why a four post lift safety check gets skipped. There’s no arm swinging out from under the car, no adapter that could slip, so people assume there’s nothing to inspect. But a four post lift still relies on steel cables, sheaves, safety locks, and a hydraulic cylinder to hold thousands of pounds in the air, and every one of those components wears with use.

We’ve been called out to shops in eastern Iowa where a cable had frayed to the point of visible strands sticking out, and nobody had noticed because the lift still “worked fine.” A four post lift safety check catches that kind of thing before it becomes a dropped vehicle. It’s not about distrust in the equipment – it’s about the fact that cables stretch, hydraulic fluid gets contaminated, and locking pawls can gum up with grease and dirt over a busy season. A five-minute look before you load a customer’s truck onto the runways is cheap insurance against a very bad day.

Starting the Four Post Lift Safety Check at the Base

We always start low and work up. Check that the lift is sitting flat and hasn’t shifted on its footprint – a four post lift that’s walked even an inch off level over time is telling you something about the floor anchors or the frame. Look at the base rails and columns for cracks, rust-through, or bent metal, especially near welds. Iowa winters bring in a lot of road salt on tires and undercarriages, and that salt drips down and pools right where the columns meet the floor, accelerating corrosion in older installations.

Next, look at the runways themselves. Are the surfaces cracked, warped, or missing traction grip? Worn decking can let a tire roll unexpectedly during loading, which is one of the more common ways people get hurt around this equipment – not from a catastrophic drop, but from a vehicle shifting while someone is standing in the wrong spot. Check that all four corner safety locks engage evenly when you raise the lift a few inches and let it settle. If one side locks and the other doesn’t, that’s not a maintenance item to put off – that’s a stop-and-call-us situation.

Cables and Sheaves: The Part Everyone Forgets

Every four post lift safety check needs a real look at the cable system, not a glance. Cables run over sheaves at the top of the columns and connect the platforms so both sides rise together. Over time these cables stretch, and equal tension matters – if one side is noticeably looser than the other, the lift can rack or tilt slightly under load. Run your hand along accessible sections of cable (lift not in use, please) feeling for burrs, kinks, or broken strands. Any fraying means the cable needs replacement before the lift goes back into service.

Sheaves themselves deserve attention too. A sheave that’s grooved unevenly or doesn’t spin freely will chew through a new cable fast, wasting the money you just spent on the part. Hydraulic System and Locking Mechanisms

The hydraulic cylinder and lock system are the heart of any four post lift safety check. Look for fluid weeping around the cylinder seals, hoses that are cracked or bulging, and fittings that show signs of leaking. A slow leak might not stop the lift from working today, but it means the system is losing pressure it needs to hold a vehicle safely, and it usually gets worse, not better.

Test the mechanical safety locks specifically – these are separate from the hydraulics and are what actually holds the vehicle up once you’re satisfied with the height. Raise the lift, engage the locks, then slowly lower onto them and confirm they’re bearing the load evenly on both sides. If you hear a lock click but the platform doesn’t visibly seat onto it, don’t trust it. Electrical and Control Components

Modern four post lifts have more electronics than people expect – limit switches, solenoids, control panels with safety interlocks. A proper four post lift safety check includes making sure the up and down controls respond correctly and that any safety interlock (like one that prevents lowering until locks are released) actually functions. Loose wiring, chewed insulation from rodents in a rural shop, or a stuck relay can all cause a lift to behave unpredictably.

We also check that emergency stop functions, if equipped, actually cut power immediately. This is a component that gets tested once at installation and then forgotten for years. During any four post lift safety check, cycle the controls a few times and listen for the motor sounding strained or the pump cycling more than it should – both are early warning signs of a hydraulic or electrical issue worth addressing before it strands a vehicle mid-air.

Documentation, Frequency, and What to Do With Problems You Find

How often should you run a four post lift safety check? We recommend a quick visual check before every heavy-use day, and a thorough inspection – the kind covering cables, locks, hydraulics, and structure – monthly for busy commercial shops, or quarterly for lighter home-garage use. Keep a simple log. If OSHA or an insurance adjuster ever asks about your lift maintenance, a dated checklist is worth more than your memory.
