We’ve walked into too many Iowa shops where the owner bought the lift first and asked about slab thickness second, and that order of operations almost always costs more money in the end. Concrete Slab Thickness and Condition

The single most common reason a heavy-duty lift installation gets delayed or scrapped is a slab that isn’t up to the job. Most 30,000 lb-plus lifts require a minimum of 6 inches of properly cured, unreinforced (or reinforced per manufacturer spec) concrete with a compressive strength around 3,000 to 4,000 PSI, and anything less means the anchors will pull before the lift ever sees full load. Older Iowa shops, especially ones built decades ago for lighter repair work, often have 4-inch slabs that were never intended to hold a heavy-duty lift’s concentrated column loads.

We always pull core samples or review existing engineering drawings before quoting a heavy-duty install, because guessing at slab depth is how shops end up pouring a new pad mid-project. Ceiling Height and Overhead Clearance

A four-post alignment lift or a wide two-post rated for a dually pickup or medium-duty truck needs enough vertical room for the vehicle, the lift’s rise, and any ramps, rolling jacks, or overhead runways stacked on top. We measure from finished floor to the lowest overhead obstruction — bar joists, sprinkler heads, HVAC ductwork, lighting — not just the roof deck, because sprinkler heads get you in trouble with your fire marshal just as fast as a low joist gets you in trouble with the lift.

It’s not unusual for a shop to buy a lift capable of the tonnage they need, only to realize afterward that a loaded box truck at full rise clears the joists by six inches. Electrical and Power Supply

Heavy-duty hydraulic power units draw more amperage than the single-phase 220V circuit that runs a home-garage lift. Most commercial heavy-duty lifts call for a dedicated 220V or 3-phase circuit sized to the specific power unit’s motor rating, run on its own breaker rather than shared with air compressors or welders. We’ve seen shops try to save an electrician’s invoice by tapping into an existing circuit, and the result is nuisance tripping, slow lift cycles, or a power unit that overheats under repeated use.

Before we schedule an install date, we confirm panel capacity and circuit routing with the shop’s electrician, because rerouting power after the lift arrives adds days to a project that should take one. Anchor Bolt Spacing and Column Layout

Every heavy-duty lift ships with a manufacturer-specified anchor pattern, and that pattern has to clear existing slab joints, rebar, in-floor drain lines, and radiant heat tubing. We’ve had installs where an otherwise perfect slab had a construction joint running directly through the planned column footprint, forcing a layout shift or a supplemental pour. Column spacing also has to account for the widest vehicle the shop plans to service, plus enough room to walk around the vehicle comfortably. We also look at door height and width, since a lift installed perfectly in the bay does no good if the vehicle it’s rated for can’t physically drive through the bay door. This step gets skipped more often than you’d think, particularly when a shop is retrofitting a bay that previously handled only light trucks and cars.

Manufacturer Certification and Local Code Compliance

A heavy-duty lift installation isn’t just a mechanical job — it’s an inspection and compliance job too. Iowa jurisdictions vary on permitting for lift installations, and insurance carriers increasingly ask for proof of manufacturer-certified installation before covering a shop for lift-related claims.
