A mechanical wedge anchor, like the Hilti Kwik Bolt, works by expansion. You drill a hole, drop the anchor in, and as you torque the nut, a wedge-shaped sleeve expands against the sides of the concrete, creating friction and mechanical lock. It’s fast, it’s proven, and it’s what most lift manufacturers spec as their default anchor for solid, undamaged concrete. When people say Hilti anchor vs epoxy, they usually mean this Kwik Bolt style wedge anchor specifically, since Hilti is the brand most techs default to.
Epoxy anchoring is a completely different mechanism. Instead of mechanical expansion, you drill the hole, clean it thoroughly, inject a two-part epoxy resin, and set a threaded rod or rebar into the wet epoxy. The epoxy cures and chemically bonds the rod to the concrete along its entire embedded length. There’s no expansion force pushing outward on the concrete, which is why epoxy is the go-to choice near slab edges, in thinner concrete, or in older slabs that might crack under a wedge anchor’s expansion pressure. Both systems can hit very high load ratings when installed correctly – the difference is how they get there and what conditions they tolerate.

A slab that looks solid on the surface can have hairline cracking, aggregate segregation, or a thinner-than-expected pour underneath. On paper, that makes wedge anchors look like the economical default.
But the real cost comparison only matters if both options are actually valid for your slab. If your concrete doesn’t meet the thickness or strength requirement for a wedge anchor, the cheaper option isn’t actually on the table – epoxy becomes the only compliant path, or a new slab does. Signs Your Existing Anchors May Be Failing
We get plenty of service calls for lifts that were anchored years ago, sometimes by someone other than us, where the anchoring is now suspect. Visible cracking radiating from an anchor bolt, a base plate that rocks slightly under load, or concrete spalling around the bolt head are all signs the anchor system is compromised, regardless of whether it was originally a wedge anchor or epoxy.
