Most two-post lifts need somewhere between 11.5 and 13.5 feet from the slab to the lowest overhead obstruction, and that obstruction is rarely the ceiling itself. It’s usually a garage door track, a light fixture, a duct, or a sprinkler head that sits lower than you think. We tell every homeowner to measure with a tape from the floor straight up to the lowest hanging point in the lift’s footprint, not just the ceiling drywall.
If your ceiling comes in short, that doesn’t mean you’re out of options. A mid-rise scissor lift or a low-profile in-ground unit can work in garages with 9 or 10 feet of clearance, and plenty of home garage owners end up happier with those anyway because they leave more room for a hoist or storage above. Slab Thickness and Condition

Before you settle on a lift location, walk your garage and check for in-floor drains, radiant heat lines, existing conduit, or plumbing that might run right where an anchor bolt needs to go. Layout also affects how you use the garage day to day — you want enough clearance on both sides of the lift for the doors to swing, room to walk around a raised vehicle, and enough space left over to still park or work on a second car if that matters to you. Weight Capacity and Vehicle Fit
It’s easy to buy a lift sized for the car you have today and forget the truck or SUV you might own in five years.
