Ceiling height is where most home garage lift space requirements conversations start and end for a lot of homeowners, because it’s the measurement people forget to check before they fall in love with a particular lift. Either way, home garage lift space requirements should account for the columns sitting several feet in from the side walls, plus swing radius for the arms when they’re extended to reach a wide truck frame.

We also factor in how much space you need to walk a full circle around the vehicle once it’s raised — for oil changes, tire rotations, and undercarriage work, you want room to move a creeper, a drain pan, and a floor jack without bumping into the columns. A garage that’s technically wide enough for the lift itself but leaves no walking room around it isn’t going to serve you well day to day, even if it technically meets the minimum footprint on the spec sheet.
