Start With Your Slab, Not the Lift Brochure

Most two-post home lifts want somewhere around a 3.5 inch slab of properly cured, unreinforced-or-lightly-reinforced concrete without heavy cracking near the anchor zones. You need clearance for the lift’s overall height, the tallest vehicle you own fully raised, and enough headroom above that for the driver to actually get in and out without folding themselves in half. Garage door tracks, light fixtures, ductwork, and sprinkler heads all eat into that number, and they’re easy to forget when you’re staring at a spec sheet online instead of standing in the actual space.

We walk this measurement with clients before ordering, because it’s cheap to fix on paper and expensive to fix after a lift is bolted down. Two-post lifts generally need less overhead clearance than four-post units, which matters if you’ve got a lower roofline or an attic storage platform. If headroom is genuinely tight, that’s when we start talking about low-rise or mid-rise options instead of forcing a full-height two-post into a space that can’t take it.

Give Power and Air the Same Respect You Give the Slab

Most home lifts run on standard single-phase power, but “standard” still means a dedicated circuit sized correctly for the motor, not whatever outlet happens to be closest. We’ve walked into more than one garage where the lift was ready to install and the electrical wasn’t, which turns a one-day job into a multi-week wait for an electrician. If your lift also needs shop air for anything, that’s a second utility to plan for at the same time, not an afterthought once the lift is standing.

If you’re planning to store a second vehicle underneath a raised car, or use the garage for anything else while the lift is loaded, map that out on paper first. A few feet of side clearance is the difference between a lift you use constantly and one you resent every time you pull a car in.

Decide Between Anchored and Cable-Driven Layouts Early

Some home lifts anchor straight into the slab in a fixed footprint, while others use a cable-driven or floor-plate design meant to reduce how invasive the anchoring is. Which one fits your garage depends on slab condition, whether you’re renting versus own the home, and how permanent you want the installation to feel. This decision affects placement, so it needs to happen before final measurements, not after.

A more permanent anchored setup is generally more rigid and often preferred for heavier vehicles, while a floor-plate or reduced-anchor design can be attractive if you might move or don’t want permanent holes in a slab you’re not sure about long-term. Neither is universally right — it depends on your specific garage and plans, which is exactly why this gets decided during planning, not during installation.

Don’t DIY the Final Setup and Alignment

Plenty of home garage lift installation tips out there suggest a determined homeowner can handle the whole install solo, and mechanically that’s sometimes true right up until final alignment, leveling, and safety-lock testing. Getting the posts plumb, the arms synchronized, and every anchor torqued to spec is where most self-installs go wrong, and it’s also the part with the least room for error since it’s holding a vehicle over your head.

Think Past Installation Day

The installation itself is one afternoon; living with the lift is years.
