Getting the home shop build out sequence right the first time saves you from tearing out concrete, rerouting conduit, or discovering too late that your dream 2 post lift won’t fit under the trusses. We’ve walked into a lot of Iowa garages after the fact, called in to figure out why a lift won’t sit level or why the breaker panel can’t handle another 220V circuit. This article lays out the sequence we recommend to every homeowner who calls us before they’ve poured a single yard of concrete.

Step One: Lock in the Building Footprint and Ceiling Height Before Anything Else

Every home shop build out sequence has to start with the shell of the building itself, because the footprint and ceiling height decide everything downstream. If you’re pouring a new slab or converting an existing outbuilding, figure out your lift model before you finalize dimensions. A 2 post lift needs roughly 12 feet of clear height to fully raise a truck, and a 4 post storage lift needs even more depending on the platform. We’ve had customers frame a garage to a 10-foot ceiling and then call us wanting a lift that simply won’t clear the joists.

This is also when you decide door placement and bay width. You need enough width on each side of the vehicle for door swing and enough depth in front of the lift for approach angle. We tell every homeowner planning a home shop build out sequence to sketch the lift footprint on paper with actual vehicle dimensions before the foundation crew shows up. It costs nothing to check and it’s the cheapest mistake to avoid in the whole project.

Step Two: Design the Slab Around the Lift, Not the Other Way Around

Once footprint and ceiling height are settled, the slab comes next, and this is the step most home shop build out sequence projects get wrong. Most 2 post lifts need a minimum of 4 inches of properly cured concrete, and asymmetric lifts or heavier models sometimes call for more. Rebar placement, expansion joints, and cure time all matter here too. A lift anchored into concrete that hasn’t cured a full 28 days, or into a slab with rebar sitting right where an anchor bolt needs to go, is a problem we see more often than you’d think. Pour the slab with the lift’s anchor pattern in mind, not as an afterthought once the equipment shows up. This single decision in your home shop build out sequence determines whether your install day goes smoothly or turns into a drilling and patching mess.

Step Three: Rough In Electrical Before Walls Close Up

Power comes next in the sequence, and it has to happen while walls and ceilings are still open. Most 2 post and 4 post lifts run on a 220V single-phase circuit, and you want that line roughed in, along with a dedicated breaker sized correctly, before drywall goes up. Air compressors, welders, and tire changers all need their own circuits too, so this is the point in a home shop build out sequence where you map out every piece of equipment you might ever want and wire for it now.

We’ve had customers add a lift a year or two after finishing their shop, only to find the panel is maxed out and there’s no clean way to run new conduit without opening a finished wall. If there’s any chance you’ll add a lift down the road, rough in the circuit now even if the lift isn’t ordered yet. It’s a lot cheaper to cap off an unused 220V line than to retrofit one later.

Step Four: Confirm Door Height and Approach Clearance

Garage doors are easy to overlook but they shape a huge part of the home shop build out sequence. Measure the tallest vehicle you’ll ever bring in with its roof rack, plow mount, or lift kit installed, and make sure the door opening clears it with room to spare. We’ve seen brand new shops where the lift works perfectly but the customer’s own truck won’t fit through the door once it’s raised on aftermarket tires.

Approach angle in front of the lift matters just as much. If the driveway slopes or the door threshold sits high, driving a low car onto the lift arms can be awkward or impossible. Walk the approach path in your home shop build out sequence planning stage, ideally with the actual vehicles you own, not just a tape measure guess.

Step Five: Order the Lift Once the Shell Is Locked

With footprint, slab, power, and doors settled, you’re ready to actually order the lift. This is intentionally step five, not step one, in a proper home shop build out sequence — ordering too early locks you into dimensions before the building is finished, and ordering too late means waiting on equipment while the rest of the shop sits unused. Lead times vary by model and season, so this step should happen with enough runway that the lift arrives close to when the slab has finished curing and electrical is inspected. Ordering at the right point in the sequence keeps the whole project moving instead of stalling out waiting on one piece.

Step Six: Schedule Anchoring and Leveling Before Anything Else Fills the Bay

Once the lift arrives, get it anchored and leveled before you fill the bay with a workbench, tool chests, or parked vehicles. Anchoring requires clear access on all four sides and enough overhead room to maneuver columns into place, which gets harder the more clutter accumulates around the install zone. We schedule this early in the finishing phase of a home shop build out sequence for exactly this reason.

A lift installed off-level or into under-cured concrete creates problems that show up months later as binding cables or uneven arm travel. Get it right during the install visit, while our crew is still on site to correct anything before it’s a permanent part of the shop.

Step Seven: Finish Lighting, Storage, and Workflow Around the Lift

The last step in the home shop build out sequence is arranging everything else around the lift instead of before it. Lighting should be positioned so nothing casts a shadow directly under the vehicle when it’s raised. Tool storage, parts shelving, and workbenches should leave the full swing radius of the lift arms clear. This is where a shop either flows well for years or feels cramped the moment two people are working at once.
