Iowa garages built in the 60s, 70s, and 80s were rarely framed with a lift in mind, so measure from the slab to the lowest point in the ceiling, not just the peak of a vaulted section.
Don’t forget garage door tracks, light fixtures, ductwork, and sprinkler heads if you’ve got a finished shop space. Most home garage lifts run on a 220V single-phase circuit, and that’s rarely already sitting in a residential garage ready to go. Some smaller scissor and portable lifts can run on 110V, so if your panel is already maxed out, that’s worth discussing before you commit to a 2-post.
Beyond voltage, check your amperage and breaker capacity, and think about where the power unit needs to physically sit relative to the columns. We’ve installed lifts where the customer had the right voltage but the outlet was on the wrong wall, adding an extra afternoon of conduit work that could’ve been avoided with a five-minute phone call up front. Think ahead to the vehicles you’ll actually be lifting, not just your current daily driver. If you tow a trailer, own a truck with oversized tires, or plan to buy a longer vehicle down the road, size the lift and the bay layout for that future use now rather than upgrading again in three years.
Permits and Local Code Requirements
Depending on your city or county, installing a home lift may require a building permit, especially if it involves electrical work or structural anchoring. Iowa municipalities vary quite a bit here — some treat a garage lift as a minor equipment install with no paperwork, while others want an inspection of the anchor bolts and electrical hookup. Check with your local building department before installation day so you’re not caught off guard by a stop-work notice.
This step gets skipped constantly because homeowners assume a residential garage lift is no different than installing a workbench. If you’re in a subdivision with an HOA, it’s also worth a quick check there, since some associations have opinions about visible equipment or commercial-style gear in a residential garage.
Choosing the Right Lift Type for Your Garage

A 2-post lift offers the best access to the underside of the vehicle for full maintenance work, but it demands the most ceiling height and the strictest concrete requirements.
