Measure Your Ceiling Before You Look at a Single Model
Ceiling height is the first hard constraint, and it is the one that eliminates the most options. Measure from the finished floor to the lowest obstruction over the bay you plan to use — not the peak of the ceiling, but the lowest thing in the way. That means garage door tracks, opener rails, light fixtures, exposed joists, and any HVAC ducting. Write that number down. Then measure the tallest vehicle you want to put on the lift, roof to ground. Add the lift’s rise, add the runway or arm height, and add a few inches of margin for the fact that you will eventually want to raise something taller than you planned.
A typical Iowa attached garage runs somewhere between nine and ten feet, which is workable but tight. Older Iowa garages, especially anything poured before the 1980s, frequently come in at three and a half inches or less, sometimes over questionable base material. That does not automatically kill the project, but it changes it.
You have three realistic paths when the slab is thin. You can cut and pour footing pads under each column, which is the cleanest fix and what we do most often. You can pour an entire new slab or overlay, which makes sense if the floor is cracked or heaved anyway. Or you can go with a four-post lift, which spreads the load across four posts and a much larger footprint and generally has gentler concrete requirements. Capacity, Vehicle Mix, and Room to Grow
Capacity is easy to get wrong in the direction of buying too little. A 9,000 lb lift sounds like plenty until you own a three-quarter-ton crew cab, which can approach 8,000 lbs before you load anything in the bed. And capacity is not just about total weight — it is about how that weight sits. Long-wheelbase trucks need adequate runway length or arm reach, and lifted trucks stack extra height onto an already-tight ceiling.
We tell homeowners to spec for the vehicle they might own in five years, not just the one in the driveway today. Overhead is cheaper and faster; a floor plate keeps the bay clear but adds a low crossover you will occasionally trip over. The number on the website is the lift. The number you actually spend includes freight, offloading, electrical, possible concrete work, and installation labor. For a residential 4-post in a good garage with existing 220V, the all-in number lands close to the sticker.
