We’ve walked into hundreds of Iowa garages – home shops, dealership bays, independent repair shops – and the ones that get up and running fastest are the ones that did their homework on the slab, the ceiling, and the power before our trucks ever showed up. Start With the Concrete, Not the Lift Brand

Every serious conversation about how to prep your shop for a 2 post lift install starts underground, not with a catalog. A standard 9,000 to 10,000 lb two post lift needs a minimum of 4 inches of properly cured concrete, and heavier duty asymmetric lifts often call for more. Age matters as much as thickness – we want concrete that’s at least 28 days cured, and ideally slab that’s been down for years without visible cracking, spalling, or patch work near the anchor zone.

If your shop has an older slab, or you’re not sure of its thickness, don’t guess. We can review a core sample or existing slab documentation before we ship equipment, and it’s far cheaper to find out now than after a lift is bolted down on ground that can’t hold it. Reinforcement mesh, rebar depth, and any radiant heat lines in the floor also need to be accounted for before anchor holes go in. If your slab won’t pass, we’ll talk through options – a new pad poured in the right spot, or repositioning the install to a section of the shop with better concrete. This is the step people skip when they’re excited to get a lift, and it’s the one that causes the most expensive redo work later.

Measure Your Ceiling Height Before You Order Anything

Ceiling height kills more 2 post lift installs than any other single factor. You need enough clearance for the vehicle’s total height, plus the lift’s rise, plus a safety margin at full extension – and that number changes depending on whether you’re running a two-stage or three-stage lift, and how tall your typical vehicles are. A shop that services mostly sedans has very different headroom needs than one lifting full-size trucks and vans.

Measure from the floor to the lowest overhead obstruction directly above your intended lift location – not just the ceiling itself. Lighting fixtures, HVAC ductwork, sprinkler heads, and door tracks all count. We’ve had customers measure to a flat ceiling and forget about a sprinkler pipe running six inches lower right where the lift needed to go. Bring us your actual clearance numbers and your tallest regular vehicle, and we’ll match you to a lift with the right rise and overall height instead of guessing and hoping.

Map Your Power Before Install Day

Most 2 post lifts run on a dedicated 220-volt circuit, and that circuit needs to be run and tested before our crew arrives, not scrambled together the morning of install. Figure out where your electrical panel sits relative to the planned lift location, because a long run adds cost and sometimes requires a licensed electrician’s input on wire gauge. Don’t try to piggyback the lift onto an existing outlet shared with compressors or other heavy equipment – it invites nuisance trips and shortens motor life.

We also recommend having a qualified electrician confirm your panel has capacity for the new circuit before you commit to a purchase date. Nothing delays how to prep your shop for a 2 post lift install like discovering on install day that the panel is maxed out and a service upgrade is needed. Get this sorted two to three weeks ahead so the electrician’s schedule doesn’t become the bottleneck instead of ours.

Plan Bay Width and Column Spacing

Two post lifts need real space on either side, not just between the columns. You need enough width for the columns themselves, clearance to fully open your widest vehicle’s doors at full rise, and room for a technician to move around comfortably. We typically recommend at least 12 feet of usable bay width for most two post configurations, more if you’re running dually trucks or work vans regularly.

Also think about the swing path of neighboring bay doors, tool chests, and parts washers – a lift installed too close to a wall or another lift creates daily friction that never gets fixed once the concrete is drilled. Sketch your bay to scale, mark where the columns will sit, and walk through your actual daily workflow, including getting a jack or floor creeper underneath a raised vehicle.

Clear the Install Zone Completely

On install day, our crew needs a completely open footprint – no parked vehicles, no pallets of parts, no shelving encroaching on the layout radius. This sounds obvious, but it’s the most common reason installs run long. Clear at least a 15-foot radius around the intended column locations, and if you’re closing part of the shop that day, plan your workflow around it in advance.

Also flag anything below the slab in that footprint – in-floor drain lines, old anchor holes from a previous lift, in-floor heat, or conduit. A quick walk-through with our installer ahead of time, even by phone with photos, saves real time on install day and avoids surprises when the core drill hits something unexpected six inches down.

Line Up Your Compressed Air and Accessories

Most 2 post lifts use pneumatic locks or air-assisted arm releases, which means you need a compressed air line run to the lift location, sized appropriately and with a drop close enough that the hose reaches comfortably. If your shop compressor is undersized for an additional station, factor that into your prep timeline too, since a new air line install can take as long as the electrical work.

Beyond air, think through the accessories you’ll want from day one – rubber slip-on adapters, tall lift pucks for trucks, or a jack tray for the lift arms. Ordering those alongside the lift itself instead of after the fact keeps your first week of use smooth rather than improvised.

Confirm Anchor Layout and Final Walkthrough

The last step in how to prep your shop for a 2 post lift install is a final walkthrough against the manufacturer’s anchor bolt pattern for your exact model. Column spacing and anchor depth vary by lift, so don’t assume the layout from a lift you’ve seen elsewhere in Iowa matches what you’re installing.
