The single biggest mistake we see when fleets choose lift capacity is basing the decision on the “typical” vehicle in the yard instead of the heaviest one that will ever cross the shop floor. A fleet of half-ton pickups with one occasional box truck or service body still needs a lift rated for that box truck, plus a safety margin. We’ve set fleets up with a combination approach more than once: standard two-post bays for the pickup and van work, and a heavier four-post or mobile column set for the trucks that show up less often but weigh twice as much. That mixed approach usually costs less than over-speccing every single bay for the heaviest possible vehicle, and it keeps daily throughput fast on the lighter work.

Factor In Growth, Not Just Today’s Roster

Fleet composition changes faster than most buyers plan for. A city fleet that adds a single dump truck or a delivery company that upgrades from vans to box trucks can suddenly find their existing lifts undersized. High duty-cycle fleet operations should generally buy above the minimum rated capacity for their heaviest vehicle, because components like cables, hydraulic cylinders, and locking mechanisms see accelerated wear under constant heavy use. We’ve replaced lift cables and cylinders in fleet shops years ahead of the normal service interval simply because the equipment was run at or near rated capacity every single day.
