Start With the Data Tag, Even If It’s Damaged
Every lift built for the U.S. market since the mid-1990s was required to carry a data tag or nameplate somewhere on the unit, usually on a column base, the power unit housing, or a crossbeam. This tag typically lists a manufacturer name, model number, serial number, capacity, and sometimes a manufacture date. Measure It — Numbers Don’t Lie
When visual identification stalls, take real measurements. Overall lifting height, distance between columns, arm reach at full extension, and rated capacity (if stamped anywhere) all narrow the field dramatically. A two-post lift with a shorter overall height and a lower rated capacity is almost certainly an older or lighter-duty design than a tall commercial unit rated for heavier trucks.
Column spacing is especially useful because manufacturers were fairly consistent within a given model line. If you measure center-to-center column spacing and compare it against published specs for candidate models, you can usually eliminate several possibilities immediately.
