Figuring out how to choose a 2 post lift is mostly a matter of answering five questions honestly before you ever look at a price sheet: what do you actually lift, how tall is your ceiling, what’s under your feet, how do you want to get at the underside of the vehicle, and who is going to bolt it down. Start With What You Actually Lift, Not What You Might Lift

Almost every buyer we talk to inflates their own needs. Somebody with a Silverado 1500 and a Camry asks about a 12,000 lb unit because a guy at the parts store said to buy big. Meanwhile a diesel shop with 3/4-ton duallys and the occasional cab-and-chassis is shopping 10,000 lb columns and will be over capacity within a month. Be blunt with yourself: list the five heaviest vehicles that will actually go up in the air, and add a margin for a loaded bed or a service body.

For most general repair and home use, 10,000 lb is the workhorse and 12,000 lb is the safe upgrade. Once you’re regularly under one-ton trucks, sprinter vans, or anything with a utility box, you want 15,000 lb or better — and at that point you also need to look hard at column height and arm reach, because a long-wheelbase van doesn’t just weigh more, it sits differently. Capacity ratings assume the load is distributed inside the manufacturer’s spec, not concentrated on one arm. This is the first real fork in how to choose a 2 post lift, and it’s the one that costs the most to get wrong, because you can’t add capacity to a column later. Measure Your Ceiling Before You Fall In Love With a Model

Ceiling height kills more deals than price does. A standard clearfloor two-post has an overhead beam, and that beam needs to clear the tallest thing you’ll put under it. In Iowa we see a lot of 10-foot pole barn ceilings, a lot of older 9-foot residential garages, and the occasional 14-foot commercial bay that gives us room to do whatever we want. Measure to the lowest obstruction — not the peak. Garage door tracks, opener rails, light fixtures, sprinkler heads, and HVAC ductwork all count.

Under about 11 feet of usable height, a baseplate (floorplate) model usually makes more sense than an overhead. The equalization cables and hoses run through a channel at the floor instead of across the top, so your vertical clearance is limited only by the columns themselves. The tradeoff is a bump you’ll step over and roll a floor jack across for the next twenty years. Above 12 feet, go clearfloor every time — the open bay is worth it. We also ask about door height, because we’ve seen shops with a beautiful 13-foot ceiling and a 9-foot overhead door, which means the truck that needed lifting can’t physically get into the room. Concrete Is the Part Nobody Wants to Talk About

Your slab is structural to the installation. Most two-post manufacturers specify a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and plenty of models want more — six inches for higher-capacity columns is common. That’s cured, reinforced, uncracked concrete, not a four-inch skim over gravel that was poured in 1974. We’ve drilled test holes in central Iowa garages that came back at two and a half inches with no rebar, and we won’t anchor to that. It’s not a paperwork issue; it’s the anchors pulling out under load.

The fix is straightforward if you plan for it: cut and pour a footing pad under each column before the equipment arrives. It’s not glamorous, but doing it during construction costs a fraction of doing it after. Also check for radiant floor heat, post-tension cable, and conduit runs before anybody drills — a hydronic tube in the wrong place turns a two-hour install into a plumbing repair. Ask about slope, too. Floor drains that pitch two inches across a bay will make one column sit low, and shimming is limited. Symmetric, Asymmetric, or Versymmetric

Symmetric columns face each other squarely with equal-length arms, and the vehicle centers between them. That’s ideal for trucks and vans where weight distribution is roughly even, and it gives you the strongest, simplest geometry. The drawback is the doors — on a car, you’re opening into a column.

Asymmetric columns are rotated and paired with a short front arm and long rear arm, which pushes the vehicle back so the driver’s door clears the post. It’s the right pick for a shop doing mostly passenger cars and light SUVs, and it’s the reason technicians who spend all day in and out of vehicles prefer it. Versymmetric designs from Rotary — the SPOA10 family is the common example — split the difference with arms that can be configured either way, which is what we recommend most often for mixed-fleet shops that see a Civic and an F-250 in the same afternoon. If your work is genuinely mixed, don’t force a single-purpose design on yourself to save a few hundred dollars. Brand, Parts Availability, and the Ten-Year View

A lift is a twenty-year purchase that lives or dies on parts support. For commercial work we sell and install Rotary and Challenger, and for heavy-duty we lean on PKS. For home garages, BendPak and Atlas both make solid equipment at a price a hobbyist can live with. What all four have in common is that we can get cables, cylinders, carriages, latch assemblies, and hydraulic power units without a six-week wait.

The lifts that give people grief are the no-name imports where the manufacturer’s name changed twice since the unit shipped and nobody stocks a matching cable. We service those too, and we can usually fabricate or cross-reference something — but you’ll pay in downtime. Ask any seller a direct question: if a lifting cable fails in year eight, who has one on the shelf? If the answer is vague, that’s your answer. Certification matters as well. ALI/ETL Gold Label listing means the design and the factory were both audited to ANSI standards, and for commercial shops with insurance carriers or ALI-certified inspection requirements, it’s not optional. Power, Plumbing, and the Install Details That Sneak Up

Two-post power units come in single-phase 208/230V and three-phase configurations. Most home garages and a lot of small Iowa shops are single-phase only, and that’s fine — just make sure you have a dedicated circuit sized to the motor, run by an electrician, not an extension cord. Three-phase is quieter and slightly faster when you have it, but converting service for one lift rarely pencils out.

Then there’s air. Most two-posts use shop air to release the mechanical safety locks, so you need a line to at least one column. We’ve walked into finished installs where nobody planned for it and the owner was pulling a lock release cable by hand. Plan the compressor drop with the electrical. Finally, think about where the power unit lives and which side the columns face, because the routing of hoses and cables sets your traffic pattern for good. Overhead assemblies want a specific column orientation for hose reach; baseplate models put the channel wherever you set it. We survey all of this before quoting, and honestly, that survey is the most valuable part of how to choose a 2 post lift — a tape measure and an hour of conversation prevents nearly every install surprise we see.

What We’d Tell a Neighbor

If you called us from a farm shop outside Ames tomorrow, here’s the short version. Buy 10,000 lb if you’re doing cars and half-tons, 12,000 if there’s a three-quarter-ton in the mix, 15,000 or more if you’re under work trucks. Go clearfloor if you have twelve feet of clear height and baseplate if you don’t. Verify your concrete with a core sample or a drilled test hole before you order, not after. Pick asymmetric or versymmetric arms unless you’re a truck-only shop. And buy a brand whose parts we can hand you off the shelf.

The rest is preference. Some people want a powder-coated finish and a nice control console; some want the cheapest ALI-listed unit that will run for two decades. Both are legitimate. What isn’t legitimate is skipping the site survey, guessing at the slab, and hoping.
