Start With the Work, Not the Lift
The single most useful question we ask is what rolls through the door on a normal Tuesday. Not the dream job, not the once-a-year diesel — the actual volume. A general repair shop doing brakes, suspension, exhaust, and the occasional transmission wants unobstructed access to the underside of the vehicle, which points hard toward a two-post. A shop that lives on alignments, tire work, and quick services wants a drive-on platform. A quick-lube or inspection lane wants something low and fast. When we skip this step, shops end up owning a lift that technically holds the vehicle but fights the technician all day.
Write down the split. If eighty percent of your tickets are wheels-off work, the answer is almost never a four-post. If you’re doing alignments as a profit center, a four-post alignment rack with rolling jacks pays for itself in throughput, and a two-post becomes the backup bay. Mixed shops often land on one two-post and one four-post rather than two of the same thing, which gives you flexibility on the days a lowered car or a dually shows up. Ceiling Height Decides More Than You Think
Iowa shops are full of buildings that were pole barns, implement dealerships, or grain-era garages before they were repair shops, and the ceilings reflect that. Measure from the finished floor to the lowest obstruction — not the peak, the lowest thing in the swing path. That means trusses, conduit, sprinkler heads, gas heaters, garage door tracks, and the header above the overhead door when it’s open. We’ve seen more projects derailed by a unit heater hung dead center over the intended bay than by anything else.
As a rough rule, a clearfloor two-post with the overhead crossbar needs somewhere in the neighborhood of twelve feet to be comfortable, and a floorplate model with the bar at the bottom can live under lower ceilings at the cost of a plate you’ll step over forever. Under about ten and a half feet, we start steering people toward baseplate two-posts, mid-rise scissors, or a four-post with a shorter rise. Also check your door opening height, because a vehicle on a four-post that can’t clear the door while you back a second car out is a daily annoyance. Concrete: The Part Nobody Wants to Hear About
A lift is only as good as what’s anchoring it. Manufacturers publish minimum slab specs for a reason, and the typical requirement for a commercial two-post is roughly four inches of properly cured concrete at 3,000 PSI or better, with more thickness required as capacity climbs. Older Iowa slabs are frequently three inches with no reinforcement, poured over questionable fill, and sometimes there’s a floor drain or an abandoned trench running exactly where a column wants to sit.
We core-test or at minimum drill a test hole before installation, and when the slab doesn’t make spec the fix is straightforward even if it isn’t free: cut out pads at each column location, dig down, and pour a properly sized footing tied to the surrounding floor. That is far cheaper than discovering the problem after an anchor pulls. Capacity, Rise, and Honest Vehicle Weights
Ten thousand pounds is the default for a reason — it covers essentially every passenger car, crossover, half-ton, and most three-quarter-tons with room left over. But capacity ratings assume balanced loading, and a loaded work van or a service truck with a utility body puts weight where the spec sheet didn’t expect it. If you regularly see one-ton duallys, ambulances, box trucks, or fleet vehicles carrying tools, step to a 12,000 or 15,000 pound two-post with taller columns and longer arms. The price difference between 10K and 12K is smaller than most shops assume, and nobody has ever complained about having extra capacity.
Rise matters just as much. A tall technician working under a lift that only reaches 69 inches will hunch all day and hate you for it. Look for the maximum lifting height and the arm reach, because short front arms are what keeps a long-wheelbase pickup from balancing properly. On four-posts, check runway length and the drive-through width — a dually needs more than a Civic does. Two-Post, Four-Post, Scissor, or Mobile Columns
Once the building and the work mix are on paper, the format choice gets simple. Two-post asymmetric is the workhorse for general repair: wheels free, doors open, full underbody access, smallest footprint. Four-post is the drive-on choice for alignments, long-term storage, exhaust and driveline work, and anything where you’d rather roll on than position arms. Add rolling jacks and a four-post does most of what a two-post does, slower but with fewer setup steps.
Mid-rise and low-rise scissor lifts earn their keep in tire and brake bays and in shops with genuinely low ceilings, and they clear out of the way when you need floor space. Mobile column lifts are for heavy-duty and fleet work — buses, RVs, medium-duty trucks — where you need to lift by the wheels wherever the vehicle sits. Brand, Parts Availability, and Who Answers the Phone
Here’s the part that doesn’t show up in a comparison chart: five years from now you will need a cable, a cylinder, a lock ladder, or a power unit. What matters then is whether parts exist and whether someone can get them to you this week.
