On two-post lifts, this is usually riveted or bolted to one of the columns, roughly waist height, sometimes hidden behind a plastic cover or painted over after years of shop use. On four-post and scissor lifts, check the base rail near the power unit or along the outer edge of the runway. The tag typically lists the manufacturer name, model number, serial number, capacity, and sometimes a manufacture date.

Count the cables, note whether the cylinder sits inside or outside the column, and check if there’s one cylinder or two. On four-post lifts, look at how the cables route from the front runway to the back and whether there’s a single equalizer cable or a pair. Photograph the cylinder body too — many cylinders have their own stamped part numbers even when the main lift tag is unreadable, and that stamped number is often enough for us to reverse-engineer the lift model on our end without you ever finding the original nameplate.
Check the Arm Style and Column Shape
Arm restraints and column profiles are another strong clue when you’re working to identify your lift model. Telescoping arms with a specific latch pattern, dual-point versus triple-point contact, and the shape of the arm pads (round, rectangular, or adjustable screw pads) all vary by manufacturer and even by product generation. Column width and whether the columns are straight or have a slight taper toward the top also narrows things down quickly for anyone who’s spent years around commercial lift equipment.

Some power units have their own manufacturer sticker even on a re-badged or private-labeled lift, which can point you toward the original equipment maker even if the main lift tag is long gone. The button layout, whether it’s a simple up/down toggle or includes separate lock-release controls, also varies enough between brands to help narrow things down.
Motor horsepower stamped on the motor plate, along with voltage and phase, can further confirm which capacity class the lift falls into, since manufacturers typically pair specific motors with specific weight ratings. This becomes especially useful when you’re trying to identify your lift model on a used or relocated lift where paperwork never made the move with the equipment. Rotary and Challenger both maintain recognizable design lineages for their commercial two-post and four-post lifts, while BendPak and Atlas home-garage lifts have their own distinct visual signatures in arm style and column trim. Side-by-side comparison photos, even from old brochures or archived spec sheets, can confirm a match quickly.
This is honestly the step where most people get stuck on their own, because sorting through decades of model changes without industry context is slow going.
