A proper hydraulic cylinder leak diagnosis starts with one honest question: is the oil actually leaving the system, or is it just moving somewhere it shouldn’t? We get calls every week from shops across Iowa — Ames, Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, small towns with one bay and a thirty-year-old two-post — where somebody has already bought a seal kit before anyone confirmed the cylinder was the problem. Half the time it wasn’t. A weeping fitting, a cracked pressure line, a tired power unit check valve, or a lift that simply hasn’t been topped off since 2019 can all look identical from the driver’s seat. Here’s how our techs actually work through it, in order, before anybody spends a dime on parts.

Start by confirming you have real oil loss, not just drift

Before we open a toolbox we want a number. Mark the reservoir level with a piece of tape, run the lift up empty, hold it at full height for fifteen minutes, then bring it down and check the level again. If the reservoir reads the same, you don’t have an external leak — you have internal bypass or a settling issue. That distinction changes everything about the repair, and it’s why we treat measurement as the first step of any hydraulic cylinder leak diagnosis rather than an afterthought.

Drift with no oil loss almost always means fluid is crossing the piston seal inside the cylinder or leaking back through the power unit’s lowering valve and check valve. Both put oil back in the tank, so nothing hits the floor and the level never drops. External loss, by contrast, always shows up somewhere: a wet rod, a stained column base, a puddle under the power unit, a greasy hose fitting. We had a truck shop in central Iowa convinced their cylinder was shot because the lift sank four inches overnight. Reservoir was full to the line. The lowering solenoid was seeping, and the fix was a fifteen-minute valve swap instead of a cylinder pull. Ten minutes of measuring saved them most of a day.

Wipe everything clean, then let the lift tell you

Hydraulic oil creeps. It runs down a rod, wicks along a hose, tracks across a crossmember, and drips two feet from where it actually escaped. Trying to trace a leak through a decade of accumulated grime is guesswork. So we degrease: rod, gland nut, both end caps, every fitting, the hose runs, and the power unit body. Brake clean and rags, then compressed air to dry it. Now the lift is a blank sheet of paper.

Cycle it three or four times full travel with no vehicle on it, then park it at mid-height under pressure and walk away for twenty minutes. When you come back, the first wet spot is almost always the source. This is the single most useful trick in hydraulic cylinder leak diagnosis and it costs nothing but patience. A stripe running down from directly under the gland nut says rod seal. Oil pooled on the lower end cap with a dry rod says the base weld seam or the port fitting. Oil at a hose joint with dry cylinder tube says the fitting, the ferrule, or a cracked flare. We keep a small mirror and a bright flashlight on the truck because on inground and low-clearance installs you often can’t see the base of the cylinder any other way.

Rod seal versus port fitting versus cylinder body

Three failure points, three very different repairs. A rod seal leak shows a film of oil that gets pushed up the rod on the lift stroke and smeared back down on descent, and the give-away is that the leak rate increases with load. Put a heavy pickup on the lift and a marginal rod seal will start dripping visibly. Rod seals fail from age, from a scored or pitted rod, from contaminated fluid, or from side-loading caused by worn slider blocks that let the carriage cock in the column.

Port fitting leaks are steady, load-independent, and usually appear right at the threads. Half the time it’s an over-tightened NPT fitting that’s cracked the boss or galled the taper, and adding another quarter turn makes it worse rather than better. Cylinder body leaks — pinholes from internal rust, a failed weld, a dented tube — are the least common and the most terminal. If oil is coming out of the middle of the tube, you’re not resealing anything; you’re replacing the cylinder. We see this most on older lifts in unheated Iowa shops where condensation has sat in the bottom of the tube for years. Nailing which of the three you have is the whole point of a careful hydraulic cylinder seal leak diagnosis before ordering parts.

Testing for internal bypass on a two-post or scissor lift

Internal bypass is the leak nobody can see. On a single-cylinder or dual-cylinder two-post, raise the lift to about chest height, shut off the power unit, and mark the carriage position on the column with tape. Check it at fifteen minutes and again at an hour. Most manufacturers allow a small amount of settling; steady, measurable descent with a full reservoir points at the piston seal or the power unit valving.

To separate the two, we isolate. Close the manual shutoff or install a ball valve at the cylinder port, then repeat the hold test. If the carriage stops sinking with the line blocked, the cylinder is holding and your problem is upstream at the valve body or check valve. If it keeps sinking with the port closed, oil is crossing the piston inside and the cylinder needs a reseal or replacement. On scissor lifts and mid-rise units with equalizer lines and flow dividers, we do the same test one leg at a time — a single bypassing cylinder in a four-cylinder system also shows up as uneven lifting or a platform that won’t stay level. Working through hydraulic cylinder leak diagnosis on lifts this way keeps you from replacing a good cylinder because a two-dollar valve seat was pitted.

Don’t skip the fluid and the filter

We’ve reseal-kitted plenty of cylinders that came back leaking six months later, and the cause was almost always the fluid. Dirty, aerated, or wrong-viscosity oil destroys seals fast. Iowa shops run into two specific problems: automatic transmission fluid used as a substitute in cold buildings, which is thin enough to sneak past marginal seals, and reservoirs that have never been drained since installation, carrying years of metal fines that act like lapping compound on a new seal lip.

When we do a reseal, we drain the tank, cut the old filter open if there is one to see what came out, flush the lines, and refill with the fluid the manufacturer actually specifies — usually AW-32 or AW-46 hydraulic oil depending on shop temperature. Then we bleed properly, because trapped air causes spongy travel and jerky descent that gets misread as a cylinder fault more often than you’d think. Any hydraulic cylinder leak diagnosis that ends without inspecting the oil is only half finished. If you pull the breather cap and the fluid looks like chocolate milk, water has gotten in, and that same water is what’s rusting the inside of your cylinder tube.

Reseal or replace: how we decide

The rod decides. If the chrome is clean, straight, and unpitted, a seal kit is a solid repair and we’ll do it in a heartbeat. If you can catch a fingernail on a score line, or there’s rust pitting in the wear band, new seals will get chewed up and you’ll be back where you started before the year is out. Same answer if the bore is scored or the gland threads are damaged.

Cost and downtime matter too. On common Rotary and Challenger two-posts, a complete replacement cylinder is often close enough in price to a kit-plus-labor that replacement is the better value, and it comes with a warranty the reseal won’t have. On obsolete lifts where nothing is available off the shelf, resealing or having a cylinder rebuilt locally may be the only path, and we’ve sourced plenty of oddball bores for shops with lifts older than their technicians. Either way, we won’t quote a repair until the car lift hydraulic cylinder leak diagnosis is complete, because guessing at parts is how a one-day job turns into three.

When to stop working on it and call us

There are a few conditions where we’d rather you lock the lift out than keep troubleshooting. If a cylinder is losing oil fast enough to leave a visible puddle during a single lift cycle, if the carriage drops when you hit the lowering handle instead of descending under control, or if you see any cracked weld, bent column, or damaged chain and cable, the lift is out of service until a qualified tech looks at it. Hydraulic pressure in these systems is high enough to do real damage, and a cylinder that fails under a loaded vehicle is not a small event.
