Picking the right hydraulic fluid for car lifts is one of those decisions that seems trivial until a power unit starts groaning on a February morning in a cold Iowa shop and a two-post creeps down two inches overnight. We install, service, and stock parts for lifts all over Iowa and the surrounding states, and we can tell you honestly: a solid share of the “my lift is broken” calls we take turn out to be fluid problems, not pump or cylinder failures. Wrong viscosity, water contamination, a reservoir that hasn’t been touched since the Bush administration — these are cheap problems that get expensive when they’re ignored. What the Manufacturers Actually Specify

Nearly every major lift builder lands in the same place: an anti-wear hydraulic oil in the ISO 32 range, or Dexron-class automatic transmission fluid as an accepted alternative. Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, and Atlas all publish something close to that in their owner’s manuals, with minor differences in wording. ISO 32 AW oil is the default recommendation for most surface lifts because its viscosity index and anti-wear additive package suit the gear or gerotor pumps these power units run. ATF is permitted on a lot of models because it flows well cold, carries detergents, and is something every shop already has on the shelf at 8 p.m. on a Friday.

Where people get into trouble is assuming all of it is interchangeable across every machine. It isn’t. Some inground and heavy-duty units call for ISO 46 because of higher operating temperatures and larger cylinder volumes. A few older Rotary power units and certain scissor lifts have specific callouts that deviate from the norm. Choosing hydraulic fluid for car lifts is not a place to freelance, because the wrong oil doesn’t fail immediately. It fails six months later, in the seals, quietly.

ISO 32 vs. ATF: The Argument We Have Weekly

We get asked to settle this constantly. The honest answer is that both work when the manual allows both, but they behave differently and the difference matters more in Iowa than it does in Arizona. AW-32 hydraulic oil has a tighter, more predictable viscosity band and a stronger anti-wear additive set, which is what you want in a lift cycling forty times a day in a busy general repair bay. It also tends to resist foaming better, and foam is the enemy — aerated oil makes a power unit sound like it’s dying and causes spongy, uneven lifting.

ATF’s advantage is cold-weather flow and its detergent/dispersant package, which keeps small contaminants suspended rather than letting them varnish onto valve bodies. In an unheated pole barn or a rural shop that swings from 15 degrees to 70 degrees in a day, that matters. What you should never do is mix them casually. Topping an ATF-filled reservoir with AW oil once in an emergency won’t blow the lift up, but the additive packages aren’t designed to coexist, and long-term you get inconsistent behavior. Cold Shops, Thick Oil, and Slow Lifts

Every winter we field calls from shops between Des Moines and Mason City reporting the same symptom: the lift takes forever to reach full height in the morning, then behaves normally by ten o’clock. That’s almost never a pump problem. That’s cold, thick oil struggling through the suction line and the filter screen. ISO 46 in an unheated building is a recipe for exactly this complaint, and even ISO 32 gets sluggish below about 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

Options depend on the building. If the shop is heated overnight to even 45 or 50 degrees, standard AW-32 is fine. If it isn’t, ATF or a low-pour-point ISO 32 with a high viscosity index is the better call — some manufacturers explicitly permit a synthetic or a 15-weight aviation-style fluid for cold applications, though you need to confirm seal compatibility first. The mistake we see most often is somebody deciding to “thin it out” by adding a quart of motor oil or, worse, kerosene. Don’t. Motor oil detergents can attack lift seals, and anything that reduces film strength puts the pump at risk. If the cold is a chronic issue, the cheapest real fix is often an insulated blanket or a small heater near the power unit, not a fluid experiment. Correct hydraulic fluid for car lifts plus a warm power unit solves the problem the right way.

How Much Fluid, and How to Fill It Right

Most two-post surface lifts hold roughly two to three gallons; four-post units and heavier commercial machines can take more; small mid-rise scissors sometimes take under two. Overfilling is more common than underfilling, and it’s genuinely damaging — when the cylinders retract, the returning oil has nowhere to go and it pushes past the breather cap, leaving a slick under the power unit that everybody blames on a leaking seal.

Fill with the lift fully lowered. That’s the reference state every capacity spec assumes. Get the fluid to the level mark or roughly an inch below the top of the reservoir, then cycle the lift to full height and back down two or three times to purge air, checking the level again after. Air in the system shows up as jerky travel, a chattering pump, and arms that don’t rise evenly. On two-post lifts with equalizing cables, uneven rise is usually cable adjustment rather than air, but we always rule out the fluid first because it’s free to check. Use a clean funnel, wipe the fill neck before you open it, and never pour from a container that’s been sitting open in a dusty shop. Grit is the number one killer of the tight-clearance components inside a power unit.

Water, Milkshakes, and Contamination

Pull the fill cap on a ten-year-old power unit in a humid Iowa summer and you’ll sometimes find something the color of a coffee milkshake. That’s water emulsified into the oil, usually pulled in through the breather as the reservoir heats and cools every day. Water destroys the anti-wear additive package, promotes internal rust, and in an unheated shop it can freeze in a low spot and block flow entirely.

There’s no additive that fixes it. The repair is a full drain, a wipe-out of the reservoir interior, a new filter screen or suction filter if the unit has one, and a fresh fill. While you’re in there, inspect the breather cap — a clogged or missing breather is the root cause of half the water problems we find, and a plugged one can also create a vacuum that starves the pump. Metallic glitter in the oil is a different and more serious signal: that’s pump or cylinder wear, and refilling won’t save it. Dark, burnt-smelling oil means the unit has been running hot, often from a leaking cylinder that makes the pump work overtime. Change Intervals for Hydraulic Fluid for Car Lifts

Manufacturers are vague here, which frustrates shop owners who want a number. Our practical field guidance: in a busy commercial bay running the lift dozens of times daily, plan on changing the hydraulic fluid for car lifts every two to three years, with a visual check every quarter. In a low-cycle setting — a home garage four-post, a dealership alignment rack that sees light duty — five years is reasonable if the oil still looks and smells right and the reservoir is sealed and clean.

The better approach is condition-based rather than calendar-based. Clear amber oil that smells neutral is fine no matter how old it is. Cloudy, dark, or foul-smelling oil should come out regardless of the date on the invoice. Keep a small logbook or a piece of tape on the power unit with the date and fluid type — we cannot count how many lifts we’ve serviced where nobody in the building knows whether it’s running ATF or AW oil, which forces a full flush anyway. Also change fluid any time you replace a cylinder, a seal kit, or a power unit, because debris from the failed component is already circulating. Fresh fluid on a rebuilt system is cheap insurance against repeating the repair. Fluid Won’t Fix a Failing Seal

The hardest conversation we have is with an owner who’s topped off a slowly sinking lift four times in two months and wants to know what fluid will stop the drift. None of them will. A lift that settles under load has an internal leak — a worn cylinder seal, a scored rod, a bad check valve or lowering valve in the power unit, or a fitting weeping where nobody’s looking. Fresh oil is a diagnostic aid, not a repair.

Here’s the test we run: raise the lift empty, mark the position, and leave it overnight. If it drops with no vehicle on it, you have a mechanical or valve fault. If it only drops loaded, suspect the cylinder seals first. Either way, that lift comes out of service until it’s fixed — a slow leak is a warning, and the ANSI/ALI standard for periodic inspection exists precisely because these failures escalate.
