Start With Slab Thickness and Age
Before anything else, you need to know how thick your slab is and how old it is. This is the foundation — literally — of preparing your garage floor for a car lift installation. Most manufacturers require a minimum of 4 inches of properly cured concrete for a standard two-post lift, and some heavier-duty models or four-post lifts want more. This is a step people skip because they assume any concrete is good concrete, and it’s the fastest way to end up with a lift that wobbles, sets off anchor pull-test failures, or worse, fails under a raised vehicle. If you find cracking near your intended lift footprint, you have options: relocate the columns slightly, have the area professionally repaired and given time to cure, or in serious cases, pour a new slab section specifically sized and reinforced for the lift. We’d rather find this out with you in the planning phase than during an anchor install.
Know Your Reinforcement — Rebar and Wire Mesh
Not all concrete is reinforced the same way, and it changes how anchors perform. Wire mesh (that grid of thin wire embedded near the surface) does very little for anchor holding strength and is common in older residential slabs. Rebar-reinforced slabs, especially those with rebar sized and spaced for structural loads, hold anchors significantly better. Level Floors, Sloped Floors, and Drains
Plenty of Iowa garages have a slight slope toward the door for drainage, and that’s normal — but it matters for lift installation. Most two-post lifts can handle a modest slope with shims and careful leveling, but excessive slope, uneven settling, or a floor drain sitting right where a column needs to go all change your layout options. We measure floor level across the entire footprint before finalizing where posts land, not just eyeballing it, because even a half-inch of unevenness compounds into real problems once a vehicle is in the air.
If you’ve got a floor drain in an inconvenient spot, we can usually work around it by shifting the lift’s orientation within your garage, but it needs to be part of the conversation before delivery day. Clear the Bay and Plan Your Clearances
Once the concrete itself checks out, think about the space around it. You need enough overhead clearance for the vehicle plus the lift’s rise height, enough width between posts for your widest door swing, and enough room to walk around the vehicle once it’s up. Clean, Test, and Document Before Anchoring
Right before installation, the floor needs to be clean — no oil saturation, no loose debris, no old anchor holes from a previous lift sitting exactly where new ones need to go. Oil-soaked concrete is weaker than it looks, and if a section of your floor has years of fluid staining, we’ll usually recommend cleaning and inspecting it closely before trusting anchors there. Take photos of your garage floor before and during any prep work, and hang onto any documentation from your concrete contractor.
