Hydraulic cylinder leak repair is one of the most common service calls we run out of Ames, and it almost always starts the same way: somebody notices a wet spot on the shop floor, wipes it up, and then notices it again two days later. By the time we get a phone call, the lift is usually still working — it just drifts down overnight, or the operator has to pump the power unit twice to reach full height. That’s the frustrating part about a leaking cylinder on an automotive lift. It rarely fails all at once. It degrades slowly, quietly wasting fluid and cycle time until something more expensive gets damaged. Here’s how we diagnose it, what we actually replace, and when a reseal makes sense versus a new cylinder.

Where the Fluid Is Actually Coming From
Before anybody orders parts, we want to know exactly which surface is wet. On a lift cylinder there are only a handful of places fluid escapes, and each one points to a different repair. The gland nut at the top of the barrel — where the rod exits — is the most common. That’s the rod seal and wiper, and it’s the failure a seal kit is designed to fix. Second is the base port fitting or the hose connection, which is often just a tired o-ring or a JIC seat that got over-torqued years ago. Third, and worst, is a weep through the barrel weld or a pit in the barrel wall, which no seal kit will ever cure.
The diagnostic trick we use is embarrassingly simple: degrease the whole cylinder, run the lift up and down twice, and look again with a bright light. Fluid runs downhill, so a base-port drip and a gland leak both leave a puddle in the same place. Cleaning the assembly first is the only way to separate them. We also check the rod itself while it’s extended — a nick, a scored line, or rust pitting on the chrome will shred a brand-new seal within a few weeks. On two-post lifts we’re also looking at whether the cylinder is being side-loaded because the carriage slides are worn, because that shortens seal life dramatically and turns one repair into an annual event.
Internal Leaks: When Nothing Drips but the Lift Still Sinks
Not every leak makes a mess. A cylinder can bypass internally — fluid slipping past the piston seal from the pressure side to the low side — and the outside of the barrel stays bone dry. The symptom is a lift that drifts down under load, or one column that lags behind the other on a two-post. Shop owners frequently assume the power unit is weak and buy a new pump, then discover the drift is unchanged. That’s an expensive lesson we’d rather you skip.
Isolating it takes a few minutes. Raise the lift, hold it on load, and watch the pressure line. If the lift settles with the valve closed and the pump off, the leak path is either the cylinder piston, the lowering valve, or a check valve in the power unit. We’ll cap the cylinder port and see whether the drift stops — if it does, the valve body is your problem; if it keeps sinking, the piston seal is done. On single-cylinder lifts the same logic applies but the test is easier because there’s only one circuit to blame. Internal bypass is also why we tell people not to judge a cylinder by appearance alone. We’ve pulled cylinders that looked immaculate and found a piston seal worn to a ribbon and a bore scored deep enough to feel with a fingernail. In those cases the correct answer isn’t a seal kit at all — the barrel is out of spec and a reseal will fail again in a season.
Reseal, Rebuild, or Replace
This is the decision point where most of the money lives, and there’s a fair amount of nuance to it. A reseal is the right call when the barrel bore is clean, the rod chrome is intact, and the gland threads are undamaged. Seal kits are inexpensive relative to a cylinder, and on many older Rotary and Challenger two-post units the cylinder body is a heavier build than what’s available new — worth keeping. A rebuild goes further: honing the bore, replacing the piston, sometimes re-chroming or replacing the rod, and it makes sense on large-bore inground and heavy-duty cylinders where a new assembly is a long-lead custom item.
Replacement wins when the barrel is pitted or bulged, the rod is bent, the mounting eye is worn oval, or the cylinder is a commodity part we can put on a truck the same week. On a typical surface-mount two-post, a new cylinder plus fluid and a bleed usually costs less in total labor than a rebuild once you account for the downtime. The short version: on lifts under about 15,000 lb capacity we lean toward replacement; above that, or on anything inground, a proper rebuild is often the smarter spend. Age of the lift matters too — putting a rebuilt cylinder in a 30-year-old lift with worn slides and stretched chains is treating one symptom.
How We Do a Hydraulic Cylinder Leak Repair in the Field
The mechanics of the job are straightforward but unforgiving of shortcuts. We support the carriages or platforms mechanically first — never on hydraulic pressure, never on the safety locks alone if we can avoid it. Then we bleed off pressure, drain and capture the fluid, disconnect the hose with a catch pan, and pull the cylinder. On two-post lifts that usually means dropping the carriage low enough to access the base pin. On four-posts and scissors, the cylinder often sits in a tight pocket under the platform, which is why a scissor job takes noticeably longer than the same repair on a two-post.
With the cylinder on the bench, we clamp the barrel (never the rod), unthread the gland, and inspect everything before installing seals. We measure the bore, check the rod for straightness, and clean every groove. New seals go in with the correct orientation and a light film of fluid, never dry, and the gland gets torqued to spec rather than muscled. Then it’s reassembly, fresh fluid at the correct viscosity for the season — an unheated Iowa shop in January is a real variable — a full bleed, and three or four unloaded cycles before we ever put a vehicle on it. We finish with a load test and a lock check, because a hydraulic cylinder leak repair that doesn’t end with verified locks isn’t finished. Fluid, Contamination, and Why Seals Die Early
Most premature seal failures we see aren’t manufacturing defects — they’re contamination and neglect. Hydraulic fluid picks up moisture from condensation, especially in shops that swing from freezing to eighty degrees in a single day. Water in the fluid causes rust on the rod and inside the barrel, and rust is sandpaper for seals. Dirt is the other killer. Every time the rod strokes out and back, the wiper seal scrapes whatever is on the chrome back toward the gland. In a tire shop full of rubber dust and road grit, that’s a lot of abrasive.
So when we do a hydraulic cylinder leak repair, we don’t just swap seals and refill from whatever jug is on the shelf. We drain the reservoir, look at what comes out, and check for milky color or a sludge layer at the bottom. If the fluid is contaminated, the new seals are on borrowed time unless the whole system gets flushed. We also check breather caps, because a plugged or missing breather pulls humid air straight into the reservoir. And we tell people to wipe the exposed rod down every few months with a clean rag and a little fluid — thirty seconds of maintenance that measurably extends seal life. Filter screens in the power unit pickup get checked at the same time; a clogged screen starves the pump and makes the whole system work harder than it should.
What a Slow Leak Actually Costs You
Shop owners tend to tolerate a small drip far longer than they should, and we understand why — the lift still works, the bays are full, and there’s never a good week for downtime. But the cost adds up in ways that don’t show up on an invoice. Fluid loss is the smallest piece. The bigger costs are cycle time, cleanup labor, a slick spot next to a lift, and the risk of a technician working under equipment that settles when it shouldn’t.
There’s also the compliance angle. ANSI/ALI standards call for annual inspection by a qualified inspector, and an active leak with a drifting carriage is the kind of finding that pulls a lift out of service. If you’re an insured commercial shop, an inspector’s report documenting a known leak that went unaddressed is not a document you want in a file. From a pure dollars standpoint, a hydraulic cylinder leak repair caught at the weeping stage is a seal kit and a couple of hours. The same leak ignored for eighteen months becomes a scored barrel, a contaminated reservoir, a stressed pump, and a full cylinder replacement. We’ve seen that progression on the same lift more than once, and the second visit is always the expensive one.
