Concrete Is The Single Biggest Variable

Nothing affects an install quote more than the slab. A surface-mounted two-post lift typically wants four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete minimum, and heavier capacities want more — six inches is common on 12,000 lb and up, and some heavy-duty four-posts and mobile column setups have their own requirements. If your floor meets spec, the install is straightforward: we lay out the columns, drill for anchors, shim to plumb, and torque down. If it doesn’t, you’re looking at cutting out sections and pouring footings, which brings in a concrete contractor, a cure window, and rebar. That single item can double a modest install budget.

We test slabs before we quote whenever we can get to the site. Age tells you something — a lot of Iowa shop floors poured in the 1950s and 60s are thin, unreinforced, and sitting on questionable base material. Most commercial lifts run 208-230V single phase, and plenty of shops have three-phase available. Home garages usually don’t have either at the right spot. If there’s no dedicated circuit near the planned power unit location, an electrician has to pull one — and the cost of that depends entirely on panel capacity, distance, and whether the run is exposed or has to be fished through finished walls. We’ve seen a simple 20-foot conduit run come in cheap and a 90-foot run across a finished basement ceiling cost more than the anchors, shims, and labor combined.

Panel capacity is the piece people forget. If the existing service is already loaded up with a compressor, a welder, a tire changer, and heat, adding a lift motor may mean a subpanel or a service upgrade, and that’s utility-scale money in some rural buildings. We don’t do the electrical ourselves; we coordinate with local electricians and tell them exactly what the power unit needs so nobody guesses. On the flip side, some lifts — certain portable mid-rise and scissor units — run on 110V, which can sidestep the whole issue for a home shop. Being flexible on model selection is often the fastest way to shrink the electrical portion of your quote.

Freight, Delivery, And Getting The Lift Inside

A two-post lift ships as a heavy, awkward crate on a flatbed or LTL truck, and freight is a genuine cost factor that varies with your address. Rural delivery, no dock, no forklift, gravel lane, tight turnaround for a semi — all of that adds handling charges or forces a liftgate delivery.
