Why a Lift Freight and Install Checklist Matters Before You Order

Most shops think about installation the week the lift arrives. That’s backwards. A real lift freight and install checklist starts the day you sign the quote, because freight companies, dock capabilities, and shop layout all need to line up long before a truck leaves the manufacturer’s warehouse. We’ve had customers order a 2 post lift with no idea the crate weighs more than their forklift can safely handle, or that their overhead door is two inches too short for the column height once it’s uncrated.

Getting ahead of these questions costs nothing and saves real money. Freight reclassification fees, residential delivery surcharges, and liftgate charges can add unexpected cost if nobody asks the carrier the right questions up front. Confirming Unloading Equipment Before the Truck Arrives

Lift crates are heavy, awkward, and usually shipped without a way to break them down curbside. A forklift rated for the crate weight, a loading dock, or a liftgate truck are the three realistic options, and you need to know which one applies before delivery day. Many commercial lifts ship at weights that exceed what a standard pallet jack or small forklift can handle, especially 4 post lifts and heavier commercial 2 post units.

Inspecting Freight for Damage Before You Sign

Never sign a freight bill of lading without inspecting the crate first. This is non-negotiable and it’s one of the most commonly skipped steps on any lift freight and install checklist. Concealed damage claims are far harder to win than damage noted at delivery, and carriers know it. Walk the crate, look for crushed corners, torn shrink wrap, or shifted contents, and note anything unusual directly on the delivery paperwork before the driver leaves.

If you find damage, photograph it immediately and hold off signing a clean receipt. Every install checklist assumes the bay is actually ready, but that’s often not the case. Concrete needs to meet minimum thickness and cure time requirements for the specific lift model, especially for 2 post and inground lifts that rely on anchor bolts for structural stability. Ceiling height, overhead obstructions like sprinkler heads or ductwork, and electrical service for the power unit all need to be confirmed ahead of time.

Measure twice — column spacing, drive-through clearance, and door height all matter more than people expect once the lift is standing at full rise. Scheduling Your Installer and Managing Downtime

Anchoring, Hydraulics, and Final Startup Checks

Once the lift is set, anchoring is where quality control really counts. Anchor bolts need correct embedment depth and torque spec for your specific concrete, and skipping this step is one of the most common causes of lift instability we’re called out to fix later. Hydraulic lines need to be bled properly, fluid levels checked against manufacturer spec, and cables or chains adjusted for even rise before the lift ever holds a vehicle.

A proper startup includes running the lift empty through a full cycle, checking for even arm movement, and verifying safety locks engage correctly at every height.
