Sometimes it is. Sometimes it’s a rusted-out safety hazard someone is trying to unload before an inspector finds it first. Why a Lift Inspection When Buying Used Matters More Than the Price Tag
A cheap lift that fails a load test or needs a full column rebuild isn’t cheap anymore. We’ve seen guys buy a used two post lift for what feels like a steal, only to spend as much again on cables, arm pins, and a new hydraulic cylinder before it’s roadworthy. That’s why a lift inspection when buying used has to happen before money changes hands, not after the lift is already sitting in your bay with no rigging to move it back out.
The other reason this matters is liability. A lift holding several thousand pounds of vehicle over a technician’s head is not the place to gamble on unknown history. If you don’t know how the lift was maintained, whether it was ever overloaded, or if it sat outside through Iowa winters without protection, you’re inheriting someone else’s neglect. A careful lift inspection when buying used tells you whether you’re buying a workhorse or a liability, and it gives you real leverage to negotiate the price down if problems turn up.
Start With the Paper Trail
Before you even look at the equipment, ask the seller for documentation. Manufacturer, model number, and year matter enormously, because parts availability and safety standards changed significantly over the decades. A lift built before certain ANSI/ALI safety standards were adopted may lack modern locking mechanisms entirely, and replacement parts can be difficult or impossible to source depending on the brand.
Ask when it was last serviced, whether it’s ever been moved or reinstalled, and if there’s any service history at all. A seller who can produce maintenance records or at least describe a consistent service routine is a good sign. A seller who shrugs and says “it’s always worked fine” with no further detail should make you slow down. We always tell Iowa buyers that the absence of paperwork isn’t automatically disqualifying on an older lift, but it does mean the physical inspection needs to be that much more thorough, because you’re not getting any help from history.
Check the Columns, Base Plates, and Anchoring
Start at the ground. Base plates should be flush and fully anchored with no visible cracking in the surrounding concrete. Cracked or spalling concrete around the anchors is a red flag whether the lift is old or new, because it suggests the anchoring may not hold under load. On a used lift, also check whether the anchors match the floor thickness requirements for the model, since a lift moved from one shop to another sometimes ends up on a slab that was never engineered for it.
Next, look up and down each column for rust, especially at welds and where the carriage rides. Surface rust on the outside is cosmetic and common on any lift that’s spent time in an Iowa shop through humid summers. Rust that’s pitted into the column, especially anywhere near a weld seam, is structural and should be a dealbreaker or at minimum a major negotiating point. Run the carriage up and down manually if you can and feel for grinding, binding, or uneven movement between the two columns on a two post unit.
Inspect Cables, Chains, Hoses, and the Hydraulic Cylinder
Cables and chains are wear items, and on a used lift they’re often overdue. Look for frayed strands, kinks, rust, or uneven tension between sides. Fraying cable is one of the most common reasons we get called out after a used lift purchase, and it’s also one of the cheaper fixes if caught during inspection rather than after a failure. Any hydraulic hose that’s cracked, bulging, or weeping fluid needs to be replaced before the lift runs a single cycle.
The hydraulic cylinder deserves special attention because it’s expensive to replace and hard to fully evaluate without cycling the lift under load. Ask to see it run empty first, then with a vehicle. Watch for drift, meaning the lift slowly settles on its own after being raised, which points to internal cylinder wear or a failing seal. Any lift inspection when buying used should include at least one full raise-and-lower cycle with a real vehicle if at all possible, because problems that don’t show up empty often show up immediately under load.
Test Every Safety Lock and Arm Restraint
The locking mechanism is the single most important safety feature on any lift, and it’s also the part sellers are least likely to mention if it’s not working correctly. Raise the lift and try to lower it without disengaging the locks properly. It should catch and hold. If it doesn’t, or if the lock feels sloppy or partially engaged, that lift should not go into service until it’s repaired regardless of how good a deal the rest of it looks like.
Also check the arm restraint pins, arm sweep, and swing-out mechanism on a two post lift. Worn pins and elongated holes mean the arms can shift under load, which is dangerous and also usually easy to spot once you know to look. On a four post or scissor lift, check the safety locks along the runways or platform and make sure they engage evenly on both sides. Uneven locking is a common problem on lifts that were moved between locations, since re-leveling during reinstallation is often skipped.
Look at the Power Unit and Electrical Components
The power unit housing the motor, pump, and valve block takes abuse, especially in shops that don’t clean up spilled hydraulic fluid regularly. Check for corrosion around electrical connections, a motor that struggles or hums excessively on startup, and any fluid pooling underneath. A dirty but functional power unit is normal on a used lift and not a dealbreaker. A power unit with corroded wiring or a motor that trips a breaker is a repair cost you should factor into your offer.
Also confirm the voltage and phase match your shop’s electrical setup, since converting a three phase lift to run on single phase power, or vice versa, adds real cost that many buyers forget to price in until after delivery. If the lift includes a control box, test every button and confirm the emergency stop actually stops the lift immediately. We’ve found control boxes with taped-over buttons and jury-rigged wiring on lifts that otherwise looked clean, which is exactly the kind of thing a rushed lift inspection when buying used will miss.
