An annual lift safety inspection is the single cheapest piece of insurance a shop can buy, and it’s the one most shops put off until something goes wrong. What we find during an inspection is rarely dramatic. It’s a frayed cable strand nobody noticed, an arm restraint gear that stopped indexing, a leaking cylinder seal, an anchor bolt that lost torque two winters ago. Catching those things on a scheduled visit costs a fraction of what it costs after a vehicle drops.

Why the Annual Inspection Is Not Optional
ANSI/ALI ALOIM — the standard covering operation, inspection and maintenance of automotive lifts — calls for a documented annual inspection by a qualified lift inspector. Manufacturers echo it in every owner’s manual we’ve ever read: Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, Atlas, all of them. OSHA doesn’t publish a lift-specific rule, but it enforces the manufacturer’s instructions and the general duty clause, which means the manual’s inspection requirement effectively becomes law inside your shop. If an employee gets hurt and there’s no inspection record, the conversation with your insurance carrier and any investigator goes badly in a hurry.
The practical reason matters more to most owners we talk to. A lift is the only piece of shop equipment that puts three tons over a technician’s head every twenty minutes, all day, for fifteen or twenty years. Nothing else in the building carries that risk profile. We’ve walked into shops where the lift had never been looked at by anyone but the techs who use it, and the arm restraints hadn’t indexed in years. The techs had simply stopped trusting them and started chocking wheels instead. That’s the pattern: people adapt around a failing safety system instead of fixing it. A scheduled inspection interrupts that drift once a year and puts the actual condition of the equipment on paper, with a date on it, so the next owner or the next insurance audit has something real to look at.
What We Actually Check on a Two-Post
On a two-post, we start at the floor. Anchor bolts get checked for torque against the manufacturer’s spec, and we look hard at the concrete around each one — spalling, hairline cracks radiating from the base plate, or any sign the slab is lifting. Thin or cracked concrete is the most expensive problem we find, because it means saw-cutting and pouring a proper footing before the lift can be certified. Then columns: plumb within spec, no bowing, no impact damage from a mis-parked vehicle.
From there we move to the lifting hardware. Cables come next, and they’re the number one reason a lift fails a lift safety inspection in our experience. We run a rag down the full length looking for broken strands, kinks, corrosion at the sheave, and we check equalization between the two columns. Sheaves get spun for flat spots and bearing play. Then locks and latches — every position, both columns, engaging and releasing cleanly with the audible click you should be able to hear across the bay. Arm restraints have to index and hold. Hydraulics get a leak check at the cylinder rod seal, the fittings, and the power unit; we watch for creep-down over several minutes with a load on. Finally the overhead shutoff bar, the electrical disconnect, decals and the load capacity plate. Scissor, Mid-Rise and In-Ground Differences
Not every lift inspects the same way. Scissor and mid-rise units hide most of their moving parts inside a folded frame, so the inspection is slower and takes more crawling. Pivot pins and bushings are the wear items — we’re looking for elongated holes, missing retaining clips, and side-to-side slop that shouldn’t be there. Torsion bars, safety bars, and the mechanical lock arms all get cycled. Because scissor lifts often sit flush-mount in a pit or on a frame close to the floor, we also check drainage and rust; standing water under a scissor frame will eat a lock mechanism in a couple of Iowa winters. In-ground lifts are their own animal. The parts you most want to see are underground and, on older units, sitting in a wet pit. We check for hydraulic fluid in the containment or in the surrounding soil, plunger travel and seal condition, superstructure play, and whether the pit lid and seals are intact. Four-post lifts shift the focus to runway welds, slack-cable safety devices, cross-tube condition, and cable equalization across all four corners. Mobile column sets get a per-column inspection plus a synchronization test — one column drifting out of level with the rest is a serious finding, not a nuisance. The point is that a real lift safety inspection follows the equipment in front of it, not a generic clipboard.
The Findings We See Most Often in Iowa Shops
After enough visits, patterns emerge. Worn or damaged cables lead the list, followed closely by locks that won’t engage in every position — usually because the release linkage is bent, gummed with grease and grit, or the latch dogs are worn round. Missing or seized arm restraints are next; they’re small parts that take a beating and nobody misses them until an inspector does. Then hydraulic leaks, which shops tend to normalize because a drip pan under the power unit feels like a solution.
We also see a lot of missing documentation. No manual on site, no capacity plate legible, no operator training records, and safety decals worn off to bare metal. Those are cheap fixes that still count as findings. One more that surprises people: overloading. A shop that bought a 9,000 lb two-post in 2009 is now lifting three-quarter-ton diesels and heavy EVs, and the math no longer works. Daily and Monthly Checks Between Annual Visits
An annual visit is the floor, not the ceiling. The checks that prevent most incidents are the ones your techs do every day, and they take about ninety seconds. Before the first lift of the morning: look at the cables where you can see them, listen for the locks clicking through their travel on the way up, confirm the arms and restraints move freely, glance at the floor for fresh fluid, and make sure the area around the columns is clear of creepers, toolboxes and air hoses. Any tech who finds something abnormal should tag the lift out — not work around it.
Monthly, somebody with a grease gun should hit the pivot points, check hydraulic fluid level, wipe and inspect the full cable run with a rag, torque-check a sample of anchor bolts, and cycle the lift empty through its full travel listening for anything new. Write it down. A spiral notebook zip-tied to the column beats a perfect spreadsheet nobody fills out. What It Costs and What Happens If You Fail
Inspection pricing depends on how many lifts are in the building and how far we’re driving. A single lift in a rural shop costs more per unit than eight lifts at one dealership, because the drive time is the same either way. Expect a modest per-lift fee in the low hundreds range, dropping meaningfully per unit on multi-lift sites. Failing isn’t a shutdown notice from the government — it’s a written finding that the lift shouldn’t carry a vehicle until a specific thing gets fixed. Sometimes that’s a same-day repair from parts on the truck: a lock spring, an arm restraint kit, a set of pads. Sometimes it’s ordered parts and a return trip, like a matched cable set or a cylinder reseal. Occasionally it’s a hard conversation about concrete or a lift that’s genuinely at the end of its life. Whatever the outcome, we put it in writing, we tag the lift, and we tell you plainly what it will take. A failed lift safety inspection that gets fixed in a week is a good outcome. A passed inspection on a lift nobody looked at closely is not.
Who Should Do Your Lift Safety Inspection
The standard says a qualified lift inspector. In practice that means someone trained on the specific lift types in your building, carrying the manufacturer’s specs, and independent enough to write down what they find. ALI Certified Lift Inspector credentials are the clearest proof of that, and we’d tell any shop to ask whoever they hire what training they hold and what documentation they leave behind. If the answer is a verbal “looks fine,” you didn’t get an inspection — you got an opinion.
