Good lift maintenance is the cheapest insurance a shop ever buys, and we say that as the people who get called after it gets skipped. We’re Auto Lift Services, based in Ames, Iowa, and between installations, annual inspections, and emergency service calls we see the full range — lifts that have been wiped down and greased every month for fifteen years, and lifts where nobody has touched a cable, a lock latch, or a hydraulic fitting since the day it went in. The difference isn’t luck and it isn’t brand. It’s whether somebody in the building owns the checklist. Here’s what we’ve learned about lift maintenance from the service truck, and what we’d tell any Iowa shop owner who wants their equipment to outlive their mortgage.

Why Skipped Maintenance Shows Up as a Safety Problem, Not a Repair Bill
Most machines warn you before they quit. A worn tire howls, a bad bearing growls, a failing compressor gets loud. Automotive lifts are quieter about it. A cable that has lost half its strands under the sheave looks identical from the floor to a cable that’s brand new. A lock latch with a bent pawl still clicks. A cylinder with a weeping seal just leaves a spot on the concrete somebody mops up on Friday. The failure mode isn’t gradual and noisy — it’s sudden, and there’s a vehicle above it.
That’s the reason we push lift maintenance as a safety program instead of a housekeeping chore. We’ve been out to shops in central Iowa where a two-post held for years on cables that should have been condemned a decade earlier, and we’ve been out to shops where a five-minute weekly walkaround caught a frayed cable before anybody got hurt. Same equipment, different habits. Insurance carriers and OSHA inspectors have noticed the same pattern, which is why documentation matters as much as the wrench work. If the lift is inspected and nothing is written down, functionally it wasn’t inspected. Keep a log — a clipboard on the column is fine — with dates, initials, and what got greased, adjusted, or replaced. When something does go wrong, that log is the difference between an accident and a lawsuit.
The Daily and Weekly Walkaround Anybody Can Do
The daily piece takes under two minutes and doesn’t require tools. Before the first car of the day goes up, look at the floor under and around the lift for fresh hydraulic fluid. Look at the arm restraints — do they engage and hold, or do they flop loose? Look at the lift pads and adapters for cracks or missing rubber. Cycle the lift empty, all the way up and all the way down, and listen. You’re listening for the locks engaging evenly on both columns and for anything that grinds, chatters, or hesitates.
Weekly, add the things that need a rag and a grease gun. Wipe the columns and the lift carriage tracks clean, then lubricate them per the manufacturer’s manual — most two-post columns want a thin film on the slide surfaces, not a heavy pack of grease that collects brake dust and turns into lapping compound. Check the hydraulic fluid level with the lift fully lowered, since checking it raised gives you a false reading. Look at every cable where it wraps a sheave, because that’s where wire rope dies first. On a four-post, check that the cables are still equalized and the runways are level front to back. Our field techs will tell you that roughly two out of every three emergency service calls we run trace back to something a weekly walkaround would have caught for free.
Monthly and Annual Lift Maintenance Tasks Worth Scheduling
Monthly is where you get past visual checks and start touching hardware. Torque the anchor bolts on a two-post to spec — concrete relaxes, shims settle, and loose anchors are one of the most common findings on our annual inspections. Test both column locks under load, one at a time, and confirm they hold without creeping. Inspect the overhead equalization cable and the shutoff bar on an overhead-style lift. Check that the arm restraint gears aren’t rounded off. On a scissor or mid-rise, inspect the pivot pins and bushings for slop, and blow the debris out of the lower frame where dirt and salt collect. Annually, an ALI-certified inspection should happen — by us or by another qualified inspector — because there are things a shop crew reasonably can’t judge. Cable condemnation criteria, cylinder drift rates, structural weld inspection, and load-holding tests all take experience and a documented standard. We schedule these across Iowa on a route basis, and shops that batch several lifts into one visit almost always come out cheaper per lift than one-off calls. Annual is also when we replace fluid rather than just topping it off, swap filters, and go over the electrical: contactor condition, motor mounts, cord jackets, and whether somebody has bypassed a limit switch. Costs vary by lift type and count, so call us with the details and we’ll quote it honestly.
Wear Parts That Fail First — and What They Cost You
If we had to rank the parts we ship most, it would be lift cables, lock latches and springs, arm restraint gears, hydraulic hoses and fittings, and cylinder seal kits, roughly in that order. Cables are the headline item because they’re both the most safety-critical and the most commonly neglected. Wire rope has a service life — it’s a wear item, not a permanent component — and any cable with broken strands, kinking, rust bleeding out of the core, or flat spots gets replaced, not adjusted. We don’t sell partial cable sets for that reason. If one is worn, its mate has the same hours on it.
Lock latch springs are the sneaky one. They cost very little, they take twenty minutes, and when they weaken the latch stops fully seating in the ladder. Shops sometimes live with a lift that only locks reliably at three of its eight positions, which is a habit that ends badly. Hydraulic leaks are usually fittings and hoses rather than the cylinder itself, and a leaking fitting on a JIC seat is often a re-flare or a new fitting, not a rebuild. Cylinders do eventually need seals, especially on inground and older two-post units, and we stock or source those for Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, and Atlas equipment. Bring us the model and serial number and we’ll confirm fitment before shipping, because a lift that sits three days waiting on the wrong seal kit costs more in lost bays than the part ever will.
Lift Type Changes the Maintenance List
A two-post asymmetric in a general repair bay, a four-post storage lift in a hobbyist’s garage, and a low-rise scissor in a tire shop have almost nothing in common in terms of what wears. The two-post lives and dies on cables, locks, arm restraints, and anchors. The four-post cares about cable equalization, runway level, and slack-cable safety function — and if it’s a portable unit on casters, about caster condition and whether it’s actually sitting level when loaded. Home and storage lifts get used less, which sounds like an advantage but means seals dry out and cables sit in one position for months; we cover that in our notes on storage lift maintenance.
Scissor lifts are the ones shops most often under-maintain, because the moving parts are tucked inside the frame where nobody looks. Pivot pins, bushings, roller wear pads, and the safety lock mechanism all need eyes on them, and debris packed into the scissor legs accelerates everything. Inground lifts add their own list — containment integrity, fluid level in a system you can’t fully see, and the condition of the plunger seals. Brand documentation matters here too; a Rotary two-post has specific lubrication points and torque values that aren’t interchangeable with another manufacturer’s spec, and following the wrong manual is how good intentions turn into a warranty denial.
Building a Program Your Crew Will Actually Follow
The best lift maintenance program is the one that survives a busy week. We’ve watched elaborate binders die within a month and simple laminated cards on the column run for years. Our advice: put the daily and weekly items on a card zip-tied to each lift, assign the monthly items to one specific person by name rather than to “the shop,” and put the annual inspection on the calendar the same way you’d schedule a fire extinguisher check. If it depends on somebody remembering, it won’t happen in March when you’re four cars deep.
Standardize your consumables too. If every lift in the building takes the same hydraulic fluid and the same grease, keeping stock is easy and mistakes are hard. Keep a spare set of lock latch springs and a set of lift pads on the shelf — they’re inexpensive and they eliminate the temptation to run a lift that isn’t quite right because parts are two days out. Train new techs on lift maintenance during their first week, not their first year, because habits set early. And be honest about what you shouldn’t do in-house: cable replacement, cylinder work, and structural repair are jobs where the downside of getting it wrong is severe. We’d rather come out and do it right than sell you parts for a repair that shouldn’t be a DIY project.
When to Call Us Instead of Adjusting It Again
There’s a point where troubleshooting turns into denial. If a lift drifts down under load, that’s a cylinder or valve issue and not something to “keep an eye on.” If one column consistently lags the other, if a lock won’t seat, if you’re topping off fluid more than once a season, or if you see any broken cable strands, take it out of service and tag it. Those aren’t maintenance items anymore, they’re repairs, and the lift shouldn’t lift anything until they’re fixed.
