When a hoist goes dead in the middle of a job, lift motor troubleshooting is the first skill our techs reach for before anyone even thinks about ordering a new motor. We’ve been installing and servicing two-post, four-post, scissor, and in-ground lifts across Iowa for years, and the honest truth is that most “dead motor” calls turn out to be something smaller and cheaper to fix. Start With Power, Not the Motor

Nine times out of ten, when a shop calls us convinced their lift motor is fried, the actual problem is upstream of the motor entirely. Lift motor troubleshooting always starts at the breaker panel, not at the pump unit. Check that the dedicated circuit breaker for the lift hasn’t tripped, and confirm the lift is wired to its own breaker rather than sharing a circuit with a compressor or welder that can trip under load.

Next, pull the cover on the power unit and check for a blown fuse inside the control box — many lifts run a small in-line fuse ahead of the contactor that has nothing to do with the motor itself. Use a multimeter to verify you’re actually getting voltage at the motor terminals with the up button held. If there’s no voltage at the terminals, the motor is innocent and the problem is a switch, relay, or wiring issue further back in the circuit. We walk through this same sequence on every no-power service call before we ever recommend swapping a motor.

Listen Before You Diagnose

A motor that hums but doesn’t turn the pump is telling you something very different than one that’s completely silent. A humming motor with no shaft rotation usually points to a stuck pump shaft, a bad capacitor on single-phase motors, or a mechanical bind in the coupling between the motor and pump. A silent motor with confirmed voltage at the terminals is far more likely to have an open winding or a seized bearing.

Smell matters too. If you catch a burnt, almost electrical smell coming from the power unit housing, that’s a strong sign the windings have overheated and failed — usually from running the motor too long against a stuck relief valve, from severe voltage drop on an undersized extension cord, or from age and duty cycle finally catching up with an older unit. Any part of lift motor troubleshooting that skips the listen-and-smell step is missing information that would otherwise save a lot of guesswork with a meter.

Check the Contactor and Relay First

The contactor is the unsung failure point in nearly every hydraulic lift power unit, and it fails far more often than the motor itself does. Contactors take a beating from arcing every time they open and close under load, and after a few thousand cycles the contacts pit, burn, and eventually stop making a clean connection. A pitted contactor can look fine visually but still fail to pass full current to the motor.

If your lift runs intermittently, works only when you jiggle the switch, or hesitates before engaging, pull the contactor and inspect the contacts under a light. Blackened, pitted, or welded contacts mean it’s time to replace the unit — a contactor is a fraction of the cost of a motor and takes minutes to swap. This is one of the most overlooked steps in lift motor troubleshooting, and it’s the reason we always tell customers to rule out the contactor before ordering a motor.

Single-Phase Versus Three-Phase Symptoms

The symptoms you’ll chase depend heavily on what kind of motor is on the power unit. Single-phase motors, common on home-garage and smaller commercial lifts, rely on a start capacitor to get the shaft spinning. A bad capacitor produces that classic hum-without-turning symptom we mentioned earlier, and capacitors are a cheap, common failure point worth checking early in any lift motor troubleshooting session.

Three-phase motors, more common on heavier commercial and in-ground lifts, don’t use a capacitor, but they’re vulnerable to phase loss — if one leg of the three-phase supply drops out, the motor may hum, run hot, or run backward instead of failing cleanly. If you’ve got a three-phase unit acting strange, check all three legs at the disconnect with a meter before assuming the motor itself is bad. Phase loss is an electrical supply problem, not a lift problem, and no amount of motor swapping will fix it.

Duty Cycle and Overheating Failures

Lift motors aren’t built to run continuously — they’re designed for short bursts to raise or lower a vehicle, then rest. Shops that run lifts hard all day, especially in busy multi-bay operations, sometimes push motors past their intended duty cycle, and the built-in thermal overload protection kicks in to shut things down before damage occurs. If your lift quit mid-cycle and won’t restart immediately, give it fifteen to twenty minutes to cool before assuming it’s dead.

Repeated thermal shutdowns are a warning sign worth taking seriously. They usually mean the motor is undersized for the workload, the power unit is fighting a partially stuck valve that’s forcing it to work harder than it should, or ambient shop temperature in summer is pushing the motor past its limits. Catching this pattern early, as part of routine lift motor troubleshooting, can prevent a full motor failure that takes the bay out of service for days instead of minutes.

When It’s Actually the Pump, Not the Motor

One of the most common misdiagnoses we see is blaming the motor for a hydraulic problem. If the motor runs strong and sounds healthy but the lift won’t raise a vehicle, the issue is almost always downstream — a stuck check valve, low hydraulic fluid, a worn pump gear set, or a leaking cylinder seal. Swapping a perfectly good motor in that situation wastes money and doesn’t solve the actual problem.

To separate the two, listen to the motor while the lift is under load. A motor that spins freely and sounds normal but produces no lift is a pump or hydraulic issue. A motor that strains, slows, or trips a breaker under load is drawing too much current, which can point to a mechanical bind in the pump itself dragging the motor down with it. This distinction is one of the most valuable parts of accurate lift motor troubleshooting, and it’s where a lot of DIY diagnosis goes sideways.

Know When to Call It and Replace the Unit

There comes a point where lift motor troubleshooting tells you clearly that the motor itself is done — open windings, a seized shaft, a burnt smell with confirmed voltage at the terminals, or a motor that’s simply too old and worn to be worth chasing anymore. When that’s the diagnosis, matching the replacement to your exact lift brand and model matters, since voltage, horsepower, and mounting configurations vary widely between manufacturers.
