Why a Lift Stuck in the Air Happens in the First Place
Most of the time when a lift is stuck in the air, it isn’t broken — it’s doing exactly what it’s designed to do. Two-post and four-post lifts have mechanical safety locks that engage as the carriage rises, and those locks are meant to catch and hold the vehicle if hydraulic pressure ever drops unexpectedly. If the locks won’t release, the lift will sit there no matter how many times you hit the down button, and that’s actually the system protecting you, not failing you.
Other common culprits include a tripped circuit breaker, a stuck solenoid valve that won’t open to let oil flow back to the reservoir, low or contaminated hydraulic fluid, or a release cable that’s come loose, stretched, or snapped. First Steps Before You Touch Anything Underneath the Lift
The very first thing to do is make sure nobody is under the vehicle or between the posts, and keep it that way until the lift is confirmed to be lowering under control. Next, check the obvious: is the lift plugged in and powered, has a breaker tripped at the panel, and is the up/down switch actually making contact? We’ve had service calls where a lift stuck in the air turned out to be a breaker someone bumped while sweeping.
If power and switches check out, look at the safety lock mechanism on each post. Most Rotary and Challenger two-post lifts use a release rod or cable system that pulls all the locks free simultaneously so the lift can lower evenly. If one side’s cable has slack while the other is tight, the locks won’t release together and the lift will hang up. Do not force the arms, tap the locks with a hammer, or try to manually trip one side while leaving the other engaged — uneven release is how lifts tip or drop suddenly. Checking the Release Cable and Solenoid System
On most two-post lifts, a single manual release cable or handle runs to both posts and pulls a lever that lifts the mechanical locks out of their teeth. If your lift is stuck in the air, trace that cable from the handle to each post. A frayed cable, a disconnected end, or a cable that’s simply stretched out of adjustment will prevent full release on one or both sides. If the cable and locks look fine, the next suspect is the down solenoid valve on the power unit. This small electrical valve opens a path for hydraulic oil to flow back to the tank when you press down. If it’s gummed up with debris, stuck closed, or the coil has failed electrically, the lift will hold pressure and refuse to lower even though the motor and locks are otherwise healthy. A technician can usually test this with a multimeter in a few minutes, and it’s one of the more affordable fixes compared to a full hydraulic teardown.
What to Do if It’s an Air-Over-Hydraulic or Air-Assisted Lift
Shops running mobile column lifts or air-assisted equipment face a different version of this problem. A lift stuck in the air on these systems often comes down to shop air supply rather than hydraulics. Check your compressor is running, tank pressure is adequate, and the air line feeding the lift hasn’t kinked or disconnected. If air supply is confirmed good, check the air-release valve at each column or post — these can stick just like hydraulic solenoids, especially in cold Iowa shop conditions where moisture in the line freezes or gums up the valve seat. When Low Hydraulic Fluid or a Bad Cylinder Is the Cause
If locks release fine and the solenoid tests good, but the lift still won’t lower — or lowers partway and stops — low hydraulic fluid or air trapped in the system is often to blame. A lift stuck in the air after lowering an inch or two and stalling usually means the pump can’t build enough pressure to overcome the load, which points to fluid level, a failing pump, or internal cylinder wear. Checking and topping off fluid is simple, but figuring out why it’s low (a slow leak at seals or fittings) takes a trained eye.
Worn or scored cylinders are a more serious cause and usually show up as a lift that creeps down under load overnight or won’t hold height evenly across both posts. Continuing to run a lift with a suspect cylinder risks a sudden drop, so we’d rather see it inspected than pushed further.
Safety Rules While the Lift Is Stuck
While you’re diagnosing a lift stuck in the air, keep the work area clear and never assume a hung lift is stable enough to work under without engaging additional mechanical safety supports, such as jack stands rated for the vehicle’s weight, placed independently of the lift itself. Don’t let anyone lean on the vehicle, rock it, or open heavy doors while it’s suspended and not fully locked, since shifting weight can be enough to jar a marginal lock loose.
Post a clear sign or block off the bay so other techs don’t assume the lift is safe to approach or that the vehicle can be driven off. If you’re not confident in what’s holding the vehicle up, treat it as unsafe until proven otherwise.
