Why You Have to Measure Your Shop for a Car Lift First

Every lift model has a minimum ceiling height, a minimum floor footprint, and a set of clearance requirements that don’t bend just because you like a certain brand. When you measure your shop for a car lift before you shop, you’re not being overly cautious — you’re avoiding a return shipment, a restocking situation, or worse, a lift that gets installed and then can’t lift a truck all the way up without hitting the trusses. Once ceiling height is confirmed, floor space is next. You need enough width between columns or posts to accommodate your widest vehicle’s wheelbase and door swing, plus enough side clearance to walk around comfortably while the vehicle is up. Measure your shop for a car lift with your actual bay width in mind, not just the lift’s footprint — you also need room for a toolbox, a jack, and space to open both doors on a full-size truck without hitting a wall or another lift.

Don’t forget depth either. A four-post lift or a scissor lift with a longer runway needs enough front-to-back space that you can still walk around the vehicle and access the trunk or tailgate. We recommend sketching your bay to scale on paper, marking where support columns, tool chests, and walkways already exist, then overlaying the lift’s published footprint on top. This simple step catches conflicts that a tape measure alone won’t reveal until installation day.

Door Height, Door Location, and Drive-In Access

A lift that fits your ceiling and floor space still won’t work if the vehicle can’t get to it. Garage door height matters just as much as shop ceiling height, especially for lifted trucks or vehicles with roof racks. Measure the door opening’s height and width, and compare it against the tallest vehicle you expect to service, not just what you drive today.

Also think about the angle of approach — a driveway that slopes up to the door, a tight turn into the bay, or a door positioned too close to a support column can all make it difficult to line a vehicle up on the lift even if the lift itself fits fine once inside. We’ve seen shops where the lift was perfect but a customer had to back a trailer in at an awkward angle every single time because the door location wasn’t factored into the plan.

Electrical and Air Line Placement

Most hydraulic lifts need a dedicated electrical circuit near the power unit, and it’s much easier to plan that during the measuring stage than to retrofit it after installation. Measure the distance from your electrical panel to where the lift’s power unit will sit, and note whether you’ll need conduit run along a wall or overhead. The same goes for air lines if your lift or accessories need shop air.

Concrete Thickness and Floor Condition

Lifts are heavy, and in-use loads on the anchor points are significant, so floor condition matters as much as any dimension you measure with a tape. Most two-post and four-post lifts require a minimum concrete thickness, often four inches of properly cured, crack-free slab, before anchors can be trusted to hold. Older Iowa shops, machine sheds, and detached garages sometimes have thinner or older slabs that need evaluation before installation.
