Why Fleet Shops Move to Columns Instead of Fixed Lifts

The single biggest reason we see shops choose mobile column lifts for heavy duty shops over inground or fixed surface-mount equipment is flexibility. A column set does not commit a bay. You wheel four columns into place, lift a straight truck, service it, roll the columns to the next bay, and lift a bus or a tandem-axle dump. On Monday you might be doing PM on a Class 8 tractor; on Thursday you are chasing an air leak on a refuse packer. A fixed lift built for one of those jobs is a compromise on the other. Columns adapt to whatever rolls through the door.

The second reason is concrete. Iowa shops built in the 1960s and 70s often have four to five inches of slab with unknown reinforcement, and cutting a hole for an inground system means excavation, water table surprises, and weeks of downtime in a bay that is already booked solid. Columns need adequate slab thickness and a reasonably flat, level floor, but they do not need holes. We have commissioned column sets in leased buildings where the landlord would never have approved a pit. That matters when a shop is not sure it will be in the same building in ten years. Getting the Capacity Math Right the First Time

Column capacity is rated per column, and that trips people up constantly. A set of four 18,000 lb columns gives you 72,000 lb of total capacity — but only if the load is distributed the way you expect. A tractor with a heavy front axle and a light-loaded rear does not put 25 percent of its weight on each wheel. We always ask for the heaviest single vehicle in the fleet, then the heaviest axle on that vehicle, and we spec from the axle number, not the gross weight.

Six-column and eight-column configurations exist for a reason. If your shop handles articulated buses, tri-axle trucks, or anything with a tag axle, a four-column set will physically lift the vehicle but leave you with an unsupported overhang that nobody enjoys working under. Adding two columns costs less than most shops assume and buys real capability. We also talk through wheel-fork width: super-single tires, wide-base drives, and off-road ag tires all need fork adapters sized correctly, and forks that barely clear a tire are miserable to position when a truck is parked slightly crooked. Power, Cables, and Wireless: Choosing a Control Scheme

Three power schemes dominate the market. Cabled sets run interconnect cables between columns and a master control; battery-powered wireless sets communicate by radio and charge from standard shop outlets; and hardwired sets tie into fixed shop power at defined locations. Each one has a real cost of ownership that shows up two years in, not on day one.

Cabled systems are reliable and less expensive up front, but cables on a truck shop floor get run over by floor jacks, dragged through oil, and pinched under wheels. We replace a fair number of interconnect cables, and every one of them was a shop that swore they would be careful. Wireless battery sets eliminate that entirely and are the right answer for shops that move columns between bays several times a day — the tradeoff is battery maintenance and remembering to plug the columns in overnight. Battery packs are consumables; budget for replacement every few years depending on cycle count. Hardwired setups make sense in a purpose-built facility where the column positions are known and permanent, and they avoid both cables and batteries. Floor Requirements Nobody Mentions Until Installation Day

Columns transfer their entire load through small wheel and pad footprints, which means slab thickness and PSI matter as much as they do for a two-post. Manufacturers publish minimums — typically four to six inches of concrete at a specified compressive strength — and we core-test when there is any doubt. We have walked into shops where a section of floor was poured over old fill and simply would not support a loaded column. Better to know that before the truck is in the air.

Flatness is the other issue. A column set needs a floor flat enough that all four columns reach the same height without racking the vehicle, and it needs to be free of the expansion-joint lips and patched trench drains that older Iowa shops are full of. Slope is common in wash bays and near overhead doors, and even a modest grade makes positioning columns a fight. We usually map the shop before delivery and identify which bays are genuinely usable, which need floor repair, and where the training area should be. Ceiling height gets checked too: full rise on a heavy column plus the height of a bus or a raised-roof service body can put the top of the vehicle uncomfortably close to lights, ductwork, or a fire suppression line.

Throughput: Where Columns Actually Save Money

The financial case for mobile column lifts for heavy duty shops is usually built on labor, not equipment cost. Every minute a technician spends crawling under a truck on ramps or reaching over a fender is a minute of poor ergonomics and slow work. Get the whole vehicle to chest height and PM times drop measurably. There is also a diagnostic benefit that is hard to quantify but real. Techs find things when they can see them comfortably — cracked frame welds, weeping wheel seals, chafed air lines, worn bushings. Maintenance, Inspection, and Parts Availability

Column sets are mechanically straightforward — a hydraulic cylinder, a screw or chain drive depending on design, a carriage, wheels, and a control board — but they live hard lives.
