Here is the single most common mistake we correct: capacity is rated per column, not per set. A column rated at 18,000 lb in a four-column configuration gives you 72,000 lb of total lifting capacity. Buy the same columns as a six-column set and you’re at 108,000 lb. That sounds generous until you remember weight distribution. A loaded tandem-axle truck doesn’t put a quarter of its mass on each wheel — the drive axles can carry well over half. So the number that matters is the heaviest single-wheel load, not the gross vehicle weight divided evenly.
We ask shops for three numbers before quoting: heaviest vehicle GVWR, axle count, and whether anything ever comes in loaded. Floor Requirements and Where Sets Fail
Columns roll on the slab, so the slab does all the work. We look for a minimum of four inches of concrete at 3,000 PSI or better, reasonably flat, with no crumbling joints or spalled patches in the travel path. Column sets aren’t the right answer for every shop. If you service passenger cars and light trucks all day, a good two-post or four-post is faster — you drive on, you go up, done. Stock forks handle most tire sizes, but the edge cases are where shops get frustrated. Super single tires on a trailer axle, small-diameter wheels on a low-floor bus, dual wheels with tight spacing — each of those may want a specific fork or adapter.
