Why Fleet Shops Outgrow Fixed Lifts

Most fleet garages start with what they already had: a couple of two-post lifts sized for pickups and vans. That works right up until the fleet adds a Class 6 box truck, a bucket truck, or a shuttle bus. Suddenly the shop is doing brake jobs on jack stands in the middle of the floor because nothing in the building will pick the vehicle up. We see this constantly in central Iowa — a county maintenance shop or a rural school district grows its equipment list faster than its building, and the lift capacity never catches up.

Columns break that ceiling because capacity scales with column count. A four-column set in the 18,000 to 20,000 lb per-column range gives you serious lifting power, and adding two more columns for a six-column configuration handles articulated and long-wheelbase units. Just as important, the columns roll out of the way. When you’re not lifting, you get your floor back for welding, tire work, or parking a unit overnight. That flexibility is the single biggest reason we recommend mobile column lifts for fleet service over pouring money into a fixed installation that only fits one class of vehicle. A shop with a mixed fleet needs equipment that adapts, not equipment that dictates what you can accept into the bay.

Doing the Capacity Math Honestly

The number stamped on the column is per-column capacity, and the total system rating is that number times the column count. Sounds simple. Where fleet shops get burned is assuming weight distributes evenly. It doesn’t. A dump body with a full salt hopper puts a wildly disproportionate load on the rear axle. A fire apparatus with a pump and full tank is nose-heavy or tail-heavy depending on the build. A refuse truck changes weight class between the start and end of a route.

Our rule when we spec mobile column lifts for fleet service is to work from the heaviest single axle in the fleet, not the gross vehicle weight divided by four. Pull the axle weights off the vehicle’s door sticker or run the heaviest unit across a certified scale — a co-op or grain elevator scale will do it for a few dollars. Then add margin. If your worst axle is 16,000 lb and you’re looking at 18,000 lb columns, you’re technically fine and practically living on the edge, because a wheel adapter that isn’t seated square shifts load fast. Step up. The price difference between capacity tiers on a column set is real but modest compared to the cost of a bent carriage or a lift you can’t legally use for the truck you just bought. Battery, Corded, and Wireless: Picking a Power Setup

You have three broad choices and each one fits a different shop. Corded columns with a hardwired sync cable are the least expensive and the most bulletproof — nothing to charge, nothing to pair, and the communication cable between columns is a physical connection that doesn’t care about interference. The tradeoff is cable management. You’re dragging control cable across the floor every time you reposition, and cables get run over, pinched, and eventually replaced.

Battery-powered wireless columns are what most new fleet installs look like now, and for good reason. You roll each column into position, pair the set from the master control, and lift. No shop air, no dedicated outlets, no trip hazards. For shops that lift outdoors, in a wash bay, or at a satellite yard, wireless is close to mandatory. The honest downside is battery maintenance: onboard batteries want to be kept on charge, and a set that sits neglected over a slow winter will need replacements sooner than the spec sheet suggests. Budget for a battery cycle every few years and build charging into the daily shutdown routine. The third option — plug-in electric with wireless control — splits the difference and works well in a fixed shop with outlets on every bay wall. Floor Condition Is Not a Detail

Columns transfer their whole load through small wheels and small footpads into your slab. That makes concrete the most overlooked spec in the entire purchase. Manufacturers publish minimum slab thickness and compressive strength for a reason, and in older Iowa shop buildings — especially 1960s and 70s pole barns and municipal garages — the slab is often thinner than anyone remembers, unreinforced, or sitting on poorly compacted fill.

Before we quote an install we look at three things: thickness, cracking, and slope. Thickness we verify by coring or by checking at an existing saw cut or trench drain edge. Cracking matters because a column footpad landing on the edge of a spalled crack will punch through under load. Slope matters because columns must lift plumb; a floor pitched hard toward a drain can put a tall vehicle out of level in a way that feels wrong the moment you’re under it. None of these are deal-breakers on their own. We’ve had shops pour a reinforced pad in the working area and keep the rest of the floor as-is, and that’s a perfectly good solution. But finding out about a four-inch unreinforced slab after the columns arrive is a bad day. Adapters, Wheel Sizes, and the Details That Stall a Job

The forks on a column set are sized for a range of tire diameters and widths, and fleets routinely include something outside that range. Super-single drive tires, small trailer tires on a service body, dual rears on a chassis cab, and low-profile 22.5s all behave differently in the fork pockets. We’ve been called out to shops where a brand-new column set couldn’t pick up one specific unit in the fleet because nobody checked the tire spec against the fork capacity chart.

Ask for the adapter list up front. Most manufacturers offer small-tire adapters, extension jaws, and axle-engagement kits, and buying them with the initial order is far cheaper than a one-off later. Same goes for jack stands and high-reach supports — once a truck is in the air on columns, you often want the drivetrain supported independently to pull a differential or drop a transmission. Training, Inspection, and Keeping a Column Set Alive

A column set is a machine with four independent hydraulic and electrical systems that have to behave as one. The shops that get fifteen and twenty years out of theirs do three unglamorous things consistently. They train every tech on synchronization and manual override rather than letting one person be the only one who knows the sequence. They inspect footpads, wheels, carriages, and cables on a schedule instead of when something sounds wrong. And they log it, which matters both for safety and for the insurance conversation nobody wants to have after an incident.
