We get calls about phase2 lifts almost every month, usually from a shop owner in a small Iowa town who bought a used two-post off an auction site and now needs a cable, a lock dog, or somebody willing to inspect it. Phase2 lifts show up in home garages, rural repair shops, and the occasional dealership overflow bay, and the questions are always the same: is this thing safe, can I get parts for it, and should I keep it or replace it? We install, service, and stock parts for every major lift brand out of Ames, so we’ve had our hands on plenty of them. Here’s the honest answer, without a sales pitch attached to it.

What people actually mean when they say phase2 lifts
The name gets used loosely. Sometimes it refers to an import brand sold under a regional distributor label, sometimes it’s a badge on a machine that came out of the same overseas factory as a dozen other names, and sometimes the owner is repeating whatever the seller told them. That matters more than it sounds, because a lift’s brand name is how you find parts, and if the name on the column doesn’t trace back to a company with a parts department, you’re on your own. The first thing we ask when somebody calls about phase2 lifts is whether there’s a data plate on the column with a model number, a serial number, a rated capacity, and ideally an ALI certification label.
If that plate is there, we can usually work with it. Column height, carriage travel, arm style, cylinder bore and stroke, cable routing — those specs let us cross-reference hardware from suppliers who still stock it. If the plate is painted over, missing, or was never installed, the machine becomes a guessing game. We’ve measured cylinders in customer garages with a tape and a caliper just to identify a seal kit. That’s doable, but it’s slow and it costs labor. Anyone shopping used should treat a legible, intact data plate as non-negotiable, regardless of what brand is stamped on it.
Parts availability is the whole ballgame
A car lift is a simple machine with a few consumable parts: cables or chains, sheaves, lock dogs and springs, arm pins and restraints, hydraulic cylinders, seals, hoses, and a power unit. On a well-supported lift, every one of those is a phone call away. With phase2 lifts, availability is uneven. Some components — hoses, fittings, standard-bore cylinders, common power units — are essentially generic and we can supply them same-week. Others, particularly cables cut to a specific length with specific end fittings and the lock mechanism internals, are model-specific and may have no factory source left behind them.
That’s where a good distributor earns its keep. We measure the existing cable center-to-center, note the fitting style, and have equalization cables built to spec. We match lock dog geometry against comparable designs. We rebuild cylinders rather than replace them when the barrel is sound. What we won’t do is tell a customer we can fix something we can’t verify — if a lock system on an orphaned lift can’t be restored to reliable operation, the lift is done and we’ll say so. Before you buy, get the model number and let us check it. Ten minutes of homework beats owning a boat anchor bolted to your slab.
Concrete, anchoring, and the install requirements nobody reads
Most of the failures we’re called out to inspect aren’t about the brand at all — they’re about the floor. A two-post lift transfers enormous concentrated load into a handful of anchor bolts, and if the slab is thin, cracked, or freshly poured, nothing above it matters. General rule for a standard-capacity two-post: at least four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, cured, with adequate distance to any joint or edge. Many Iowa shop floors, especially additions and older farm buildings, don’t meet that. We core-test when there’s any doubt.
Anchors need to be the correct diameter and embedment depth, torqued to spec, and re-checked after the first few weeks of use. We’ve pulled anchors out by hand on installs done by well-meaning owners who used whatever wedge bolts the hardware store had. Overhead clearance is the other thing people underestimate — you need room for the crossbar plus the tallest vehicle you plan to service, and if you’re running a clearfloor style, you need floor space for the base plate or a trench for the equalizer. We walk the bay with a tape before we quote anything, and we’ll tell you when a four-post makes more sense than fighting the slab.
Safety inspection: what we look for first
Any used lift coming into service should get a full inspection, and that’s doubly true for phase2 lifts with unknown history. We start at the cables — every strand, at every sheave, looking for broken wires, flat spots, corrosion, and stretch. A single broken wire in a running strand is a replacement, not a repair. Then the sheaves themselves: worn grooves eat cables fast. Then the locks. Every lock position, both columns, engaging and releasing cleanly under load, with the audible click you should hear on the way up.
After that it’s arms and restraints, pin play, weld condition at high-stress points, the carriage slide blocks, hydraulic leaks, hose chafing, cylinder rod condition, and the power unit’s ability to hold pressure. We also check that the overhead shut-off works and that the safety decals are present and readable. ALI-standard annual inspection is the baseline we recommend for every commercial customer in Iowa regardless of brand, and it’s what an insurance adjuster will ask about after an incident. If a machine can’t pass, we document why and give the owner a written repair path or a replacement recommendation. Nobody benefits from us signing off on a lift we wouldn’t stand under.
Repair or replace: how we run the math
The decision is less emotional than people expect. Add up what the machine needs — cables, locks, cylinder rebuild, arm restraints, labor — and compare that against a new lift with a warranty, current ALI certification, and a parts pipeline that will still exist in ten years. When the repair total climbs past roughly a third to a half of a new unit’s cost, and the lift is an orphan brand, replacement usually wins. When it needs one cable set and a lock spring, fix it and get back to work.
There’s a second variable: what the lift is for. A home enthusiast doing a couple of oil changes a month and storing a project car has a different risk and duty-cycle profile than a two-bay shop putting sixty vehicles a week on it. We’re comfortable rebuilding a sound older lift for light home use. For a production bay where downtime costs real money, we push toward equipment we can support indefinitely. On the commercial side that means Rotary and Challenger, with Challenger PKS for heavy-duty work. For home garages, BendPak and Atlas both have solid parts support and honest capacity ratings. Those recommendations aren’t about brand loyalty; they’re about being able to get you a part on Thursday.
Fluid, maintenance, and the habits that double lift life
The cheapest thing you can do for any lift, including phase2 lifts still in service, is maintain it on a schedule. Check hydraulic fluid level monthly and keep it clean — most power unit failures we see trace back to contaminated or low fluid. Lubricate the cable sheaves and the carriage slide blocks per the manual, or quarterly if you don’t have a manual. Grease the arm pivots. Wipe the columns. Keep the lock linkage free of debris and rust so the dogs drop fully into every position.
Then there’s operator behavior, which matters just as much. Load the vehicle at its manufacturer-specified lift points, center it front-to-back so the columns share the load, and always lower onto the locks before anyone gets under it. Don’t rock a car on the arms. Don’t use the lift as a press. Don’t let an untrained tech run it. We’ve inspected two identical lifts in the same county — one at eighteen years old and tight as new, one at six years old and unsafe. The difference was entirely maintenance and operator discipline.
