Slab Thickness and Cure Time

Every pole building lift install checklist has to start underground. Most 2-post lifts need at least 4 inches of properly reinforced concrete under the anchor points, and we prefer to see it poured well before installation day rather than a fresh pour that’s still curing. Pole barn slabs are sometimes an afterthought poured after the building goes up, and contractors occasionally skimp on thickness or rebar in the corners where lifts tend to go. We’ve had to turn away install days because the slab was 3 inches of unreinforced concrete that wouldn’t hold an anchor bolt under load.

If your slab is already down, get the thickness confirmed with a core sample or at minimum a solid measurement at the pour edge before we show up. If you’re pouring new, tell your concrete contractor exactly where the lift columns will sit and ask for extra depth and rebar in that footprint. Before finalizing anything on your pole building lift install checklist, measure from the slab to the lowest obstruction directly above where the lift will sit, not just the stated building height on the plans. A 9-foot ceiling number on paper can turn into 8 feet 4 inches once you’re standing under a truss.

This matters because a 2-post lift needs enough overhead room to raise a truck or SUV to full height without the vehicle’s roof or antenna clipping the ceiling, and the columns themselves have a fixed overall height. If your clearance is tight, a lower-rise 2-post model or a mobile column setup that doesn’t require overhead structure at all might fit your building better than the tallest lift you can find online. Column Spacing and Bay Width

Pole buildings are built on post spacing, usually in increments tied to the building’s structural bays, and that spacing dictates where your lift columns can realistically sit. We’ve seen owners plan a lift dead center in a bay only to discover a support post or knee brace sits exactly where a column needs to go.

Beyond the structural posts, you need enough side clearance for full door swing on the vehicle you’re lifting and enough room to walk around the lift while it’s raised. A good rule for most 2-post lifts is at least 12 feet of clear width and enough depth to pull a full-size pickup in nose-first with room to spare. Electrical Service and Runs

Measure your tallest expected vehicle against your door opening before you commit to equipment.

This also affects how you plan traffic flow inside the building. If you’ve got one door and one lift, plan enough space to maneuver a vehicle onto the lift without backing into a wall or another bay.

Anchor Bolt and Hydraulic Line Planning

Anchoring requirements vary by lift model, and a pole building lift install checklist should specify anchor bolt depth and edge distance for your exact equipment, not a generic number. We check manufacturer specs against your slab before drilling, because getting this wrong once means patching holes and moving the layout.

Hydraulic line routing between columns also needs a clear path, either through the slab or along the surface, and pole buildings with in-floor drainage or radiant heat lines need extra care here to avoid conflicts.
