When a bay goes down because the lift won’t budge, rotary lift hydraulic pump troubleshooting is usually the first skill we lean on before we ever load a truck. We’ve been installing and servicing lifts across Iowa long enough to know that most “dead pump” calls aren’t actually dead pumps — they’re a low fluid level, a stuck check valve, a worn seal, or a motor that’s spinning the wrong way. This guide walks through the diagnostic order we actually use in the field, so you can figure out whether you need a five-minute fix or a replacement unit before you ever pick up the phone.

Start With the Symptom, Not the Part

Before you touch a wrench, write down exactly what the lift is doing. A pump that hums but won’t lift anything behaves very differently from a pump that lifts fine but won’t hold, or one that’s dead silent when you hit the button. Each of those symptoms points to a different failure mode, and lumping them all together as “pump problem” is how shops end up buying parts they didn’t need. In our experience, rotary lift hydraulic pump troubleshooting goes faster when you separate the electrical side (does the motor run at all) from the hydraulic side (is fluid actually moving and being retained).

If the motor hums but the arms don’t move, that’s almost always mechanical — a seized pump gerotor, a jammed check valve, or a release valve stuck partially open. If the motor doesn’t run at all, you’re dealing with power supply, a bad start relay, or a fried motor winding, and no amount of fluid or seal work will fix that. Getting this distinction right in the first sixty seconds saves an enormous amount of wasted diagnostic time, and it’s the single biggest lesson we pass along to techs who are new to lift work.

Check Fluid Level and Condition First

It sounds too simple to matter, but low or contaminated fluid causes more service calls than any other single issue we see on Rotary equipment. Pull the reservoir cap and look — fluid should be clean, reddish or gold, and up to the fill line with the lift fully lowered. If it’s milky, it’s picked up water or air and needs to be drained and replaced. If it’s dark or smells burnt, the pump has been working overtime and you may be looking at internal wear on top of the fluid issue.

Low fluid alone can make a pump run but fail to build pressure, which mimics a much more serious failure. We’ve driven out to jobs expecting a full pump replacement and found the reservoir was simply a quart low, likely from a slow weep at a fitting nobody had noticed. Top it off with the correct hydraulic fluid — never substitute automatic transmission fluid or generic hydraulic oil without checking the manual — and cycle the lift a few times to bleed out trapped air before you assume anything else is wrong.

Listen to the Motor and Test the Electrical Supply

A healthy pump motor has a distinct, steady hum under load. If you hear a weak buzz followed by nothing, or the motor trips a breaker every time it’s asked to lift real weight, you’re likely looking at a voltage drop, an undersized circuit, or a motor that’s drawing too many amps because of internal wear. Check the supply voltage at the motor terminals while it’s under load, not just at rest — a lot of shops have wiring that reads fine sitting idle but sags badly the moment the motor pulls real current.

Also check the start relay or capacitor if your unit uses one. A bad start capacitor is a classic cause of a motor that hums but never spins up, and it’s a cheap part to rule out before condemning the whole pump assembly. We keep these on hand specifically because they fail more often than the pump itself on units that are five to ten years old.

Inspect the Check Valve and Release Valve

The check valve is what keeps a vehicle from dropping the instant you let off the up button, and when it’s stuck or worn, you’ll see the platform creep down slowly even with the motor off. Debris in the fluid is the usual culprit — a tiny piece of grit holding the valve seat open just enough to leak fluid back to the reservoir. Pulling and cleaning the valve, or replacing it outright if the seat is scored, solves this in the majority of cases we run into.

The release valve, on the other hand, controls lowering. If your lift won’t come down at all, or comes down too fast, that valve — or its solenoid — is where we look next. A solenoid that’s gummed up with old fluid residue can stick in either position, and it’s worth testing manually before assuming it’s an electrical failure.

Rule Out Seal Failure Before Replacing the Pump

Internal seal wear inside the pump housing lets fluid bypass the gerotor instead of building pressure, which shows up as a lift that rises with no weight on it but stalls or creeps under a real vehicle. This is one of the trickiest failures to diagnose without pulling the unit apart, because externally everything looks normal. If you’ve confirmed good fluid, good voltage, and clean valves, and the lift still can’t hold a car under load, worn internal seals are the next suspect.

Two-Post Lifts Have Their Own Quirks

If you’re running a two-post configuration, there’s an added wrinkle: the hydraulic cylinder is usually built into one column, and bypassing it correctly during diagnosis matters for both accuracy and safety. Don’t skip the visual inspection of hoses and fittings on these units either. A pinhole leak under a boot or clamp can look identical to a pump problem from the driver’s seat, since both result in a lift that loses pressure slowly over a shift.

When to Call In a Professional Technician

Some of this troubleshooting is safe and reasonable for an experienced shop owner to do alone — checking fluid, listening to the motor, inspecting an accessible valve. But once you’re pulling a pump housing, working with vehicles suspended overhead, or dealing with wiring inside a control box, it’s time to call someone certified to do it.
