Retrofitting a home garage for a lift is less about the lift itself and more about the building around it — and that’s the part most homeowners underestimate until we show up for a site visit. We’ve walked into garages built in the 1970s with slabs that need repair, garages with 7-foot ceilings that rule out a two-post entirely, and garages with a single 15-amp circuit that can’t run anything hydraulic. Start With the Slab, Not the Lift

Every serious conversation about retrofitting a home garage for a lift starts underground, not with the equipment catalog. Most two-post and four-post lifts need a minimum of 4 inches of properly cured concrete, and older Iowa homes — especially anything built before the late 1980s — often have slabs thinner than that, or slabs that were poured without rebar and have since developed hairline cracking from freeze-thaw cycles. Most home garages are wired for lights, a garage door opener, and maybe a chest freezer — not for a hydraulic power unit. Two-post and four-post lifts typically call for a dedicated 220V/230V circuit, and a lot of detached garages we visit are still running entirely on 110V. The good news is this is usually a manageable upgrade compared to slab work. Two-post lifts need enough width between columns for your specific vehicles’ wheelbase and door-swing, and four-post lifts need runway length that can eat a surprising amount of garage depth.
