Most two-post lifts are designed around a passenger car or pickup frame, with arm reach and swing patterns built for those wheelbases and pick-up points. Travel trailers and fifth wheels don’t cooperate with that geometry. The frame rails sit differently, tongue weight is unevenly distributed, and axles can be spaced far wider than anything a two-post arm was designed to clear. Force a trailer onto the wrong lift and you risk unstable contact points, arm binding, or simply not being able to get the arms under the frame at all.

Trailer weights vary enormously — a small travel trailer might weigh a few thousand pounds empty, while a loaded fifth wheel or toy hauler can push toward 20,000 pounds. RV trailer service lifts have to be sized for the heaviest unit you expect to see, not the average one, because guessing wrong means either buying twice or turning away work. We walk through actual dealer inventory and repair logs with shop owners before recommending a capacity, because underspecing a lift is the single most common mistake we see in this segment.

It’s also worth accounting for growth. If your shop is picking up more toy hauler and heavy fifth-wheel traffic, a lift sized for today’s fleet might be inadequate in two years. We factor that into every quote rather than just matching a number on a spec sheet.

Clearance, Width, and Bay Layout

Trailers are long and often wide, which means bay layout matters as much as the lift itself. We recommend more frequent inspection intervals for shops running these units daily, especially checking for slow drift, uneven platform leveling, and hydraulic fluid condition. Catching a small leak or a fraying cable early is far cheaper than an emergency shutdown during a busy service season.
