Slide blocks are the small nylon or UHMW plastic wear pads that ride inside the column channel and keep the carriage riding smooth and square. What Slide Blocks Actually Do

Every two post lift, Rotary included, uses a carriage that travels up and down inside a steel column. That carriage doesn’t touch bare steel on steel. It rides on a set of plastic slide blocks bolted or pressed onto the carriage, and those blocks are the only thing keeping metal from grinding on metal every time the lift cycles. As those blocks wear down from years of use, dust, and dry heat cycles, the carriage gets sloppy in the channel. That’s when you start feeling side to side play, hearing a scraping noise, or noticing the lift arms swing a little when you’re loading a vehicle.

Rotary designs their columns with a specific channel width, and the slide blocks are sized to take up that clearance precisely. When they wear thin, that clearance grows, and the carriage starts to rock. It’s not usually a safety failure point that causes a sudden drop, but it accelerates wear on the column itself and makes the whole lift feel unstable. Left long enough, metal-to-metal contact inside the column can gouge the steel, and at that point you’re looking at a column replacement instead of a set of slide blocks that cost a fraction as much.

Signs You Need Rotary Lift Slide Block Replacement

The most obvious sign is play in the carriage. Grab the arm assembly with the lift empty and give it a shake side to side. If it moves more than a slight amount, worn slide blocks are the likely culprit. A second sign is uneven travel — one side of the lift reaching full height noticeably before the other, which points to uneven wear between columns. A third sign, and one shop owners often miss, is a scraping or squeaking sound during travel that wasn’t there a year ago.

We also look at how the lift sits when it’s fully lowered. If the carriage tilts forward or backward slightly at rest, that’s often slide block wear too, not just a leveling issue. On older Rotary lifts that have seen fifteen or more years of daily use in a busy shop, we expect to find worn blocks almost every time we inspect. It’s a maintenance item, not a defect, and catching it early during a routine inspection is far cheaper than catching it after the column shows scoring. The Replacement Process on a Rotary Two Post

Rotary lift slide block replacement starts with getting the carriage supported safely and the lift fully unloaded — this isn’t a job to do with a vehicle on the lift. We raise the carriage, block it mechanically so it can’t drop, and then access the slide blocks from the carriage itself. On most Rotary models, the blocks are held with bolts or set into a channel and can be swapped without pulling the entire carriage off the column, though on some older models the carriage does need to come down and off to get full access.

Once the old blocks are out, we clean the column channel of accumulated grease, dust, and grit before the new ones go in — that debris is often part of why the blocks wore unevenly in the first place. We check both columns even if only one side is showing symptoms, because wear tends to happen at close to the same rate and it’s inefficient to do the job twice in six months. After the new blocks are in, we run the lift through a full cycle empty, checking for smooth travel and even side to side height before we call it done and put a vehicle back on it.

OEM Rotary Parts Versus Generic Slide Blocks

We only install genuine Rotary replacement parts on Rotary equipment, and slide blocks are no exception. Generic or off-brand blocks are out there, usually cheaper, but the material composition and tolerance to the actual column channel width matter more on this part than almost any other wear item on the lift. A block that’s slightly undersized reintroduces the play you were trying to fix. A block that’s slightly oversized can bind the carriage or wear the column paint and surface prematurely.

A handy shop owner or home garage user with the right tools can often do a straightforward slide block swap themselves, provided the carriage doesn’t need to come fully off the column. The parts aren’t expensive and the tools required are basic hand tools plus a way to safely support the carriage. Where we see people get into trouble is skipping the mechanical support step and trying to work with the carriage held only by hydraulic pressure — that’s a fall hazard we won’t compromise on, even for a simple parts swap.

How Often Slide Blocks Need Replacing

There’s no fixed mileage or hour interval for slide blocks the way there is for an oil change, but in our experience shops running a Rotary lift daily, multiple cycles a day, tend to see meaningful wear somewhere in the eight to fifteen year range depending on how well the lift was maintained. Dusty environments, unheated shops with big temperature swings, and lifts that don’t get lubricated on schedule all wear blocks faster. A home garage lift used a handful of times a month might go twenty years before it’s an issue.
