A checklist that lives only in someone’s head isn’t a checklist — it’s a habit that dies the day that person quits or takes a vacation. We’ve walked into shops where the owner swears the crew inspects lifts weekly, but there’s no log, no signature, no date. When we ask the techs directly, half of them have never actually looked at the safety locks. A written service bay safety checklist forces accountability. Weight Ratings and Vehicle Positioning

One of the most overlooked items on any service bay safety checklist is confirming the vehicle’s actual weight against the lift’s rated capacity — and against the actual point of lift, not just the total curb weight. A half-ton pickup with a service body or a fleet van loaded with equipment can weigh more than the sticker suggests. We see this constantly with Iowa municipal and utility fleets running heavier-than-stock trucks on lifts rated for standard passenger vehicles.

Positioning matters just as much as weight. Pads need to sit on the manufacturer’s recommended lift points, not wherever looks convenient. Off-center loading is one of the leading causes of lift tip-over incidents, and it’s completely preventable with a five-second check before the vehicle goes up. We train techs to raise the vehicle a few inches, give it a shake test, and confirm it’s stable before continuing to full height. Documentation, Inspection Frequency, and Who Signs Off

A service bay safety checklist only works if someone owns it. We recommend a tiered system: techs do a quick pre-shift visual check, a shop foreman does a weekly walk-through with a more detailed form, and a certified lift inspector does an annual full inspection per ALI guidelines. Each tier should have its own sign-off sheet, dated and initialed, kept on file for at least a few years.

That culture shift usually comes from ownership actually enforcing it, spot-checking sign-off sheets, and following up when something gets missed.

It also helps to revisit the checklist itself periodically. Lift manufacturers update maintenance recommendations, your fleet mix changes, and bays get reconfigured.
