Every shop build out guide should start with the same question: what will this space actually be used for in five years, not just this year? We have seen owners plan a shop around one truck and a couple of oil changes, only to add a second bay, a tire machine, and a two post lift within eighteen months. By then the electrical panel is undersized, the floor slopes the wrong way for a drain, and the ceiling height barely clears a lift in the raised position. We recommend a minimum of four inches for light two post lifts and closer to five or six inches with proper rebar and psi rating for heavier four post or in-ground equipment. Skimping here to save money is the fastest way to void a lift manufacturer’s warranty and create a safety issue down the road.
Beyond thickness, think about slope, drainage, and surface finish. A slight slope toward a floor drain keeps water and fluids from pooling under vehicles. A broom finish gives better traction than a glass-smooth trowel finish, especially with oil or coolant on the floor. If you are pouring new concrete specifically for lift anchoring, get the lift manufacturer’s floor spec sheet in hand before the pour, not after. Any competent contractor will build to spec, but only if you hand them the spec. This one document has saved more shop build out projects than anything else we hand customers.
Electrical and Air Supply Planning
Most shop owners underestimate their electrical needs by a wide margin. A single two post lift might only need a 220V 20-amp circuit, but once you add a tire machine, alignment rack, welder, and air compressor, you are looking at a service upgrade most older rural buildings were never wired for. We strongly recommend having an electrician review your full equipment list, not just the lift, before the panel gets sized.
Compressed air is just as important and often overlooked. Undersized air lines create pressure drops that make impact guns and tire machines sluggish, and that frustration compounds daily once the shop is running. Plan your air compressor location, line routing, and drop points during the build out, not after drywall goes up. It is far cheaper to run copper or aluminum air line behind open studs than to retrofit it later. Layout: Bay Spacing, Traffic Flow, and Ceiling Height

Traffic flow inside the shop is the other piece people forget. Where do customers walk in? Where does a technician push a floor jack or roll a parts cart? Where do finished vehicles exit without crossing paths with vehicles coming in? Walking through your layout with actual vehicle dimensions taped off on the floor, before any lift is bolted down, catches problems that are nearly impossible to fix later. Choosing the Right Lift for Your Build
The lift is usually the single biggest equipment decision in the whole build out, and it should be chosen based on your actual work, not just what looks impressive. A general repair shop doing oil changes, brakes, and tires does well with a solid two post lift. A shop handling alignments, undercarriage work, or heavier trucks may lean toward a four post or a combination of both. Do not order a lift before your building plans are locked, and do not finalize building plans without knowing your lift’s footprint, anchor pattern, and power requirements. Budgeting for the Full Build, Not Just the Lift
