We’ve been into hundreds of these units across Iowa shops, dealerships, and home garages, and the cylinder is one of the few components that takes real abuse every single cycle — full extension, full retraction, thousands of times a year. The good news is that most cylinder problems are repairable without buying a whole new lift. The trick is knowing whether a reseal will hold or whether the barrel itself is damaged enough that replacement is the smarter money.

Signs You Need Scissor Lift Cylinder Repair

The most obvious symptom is drift — a lift that slowly settles down over minutes or hours even with the load already parked and the lift lowered onto its mechanical locks. Another is visible oil weeping from around the rod where it enters the barrel, or oil pooling under the power unit end. Neither of these means the whole lift is done for; they mean the internal seals or the rod surface have worn past the point of holding pressure.

We also see cylinders that make noise — a knocking or clunking as the lift rises — which usually points to internal scoring or a bent rod rather than a simple seal failure. And on older units, we sometimes find pitting or rust on the exposed rod itself, which will tear up a new seal in a matter of weeks if it isn’t addressed as part of the repair. Catching any of these early, before the lift is run dry or a customer’s vehicle is sitting on a leaking unit, keeps a simple scissor lift cylinder repair from turning into a full cylinder swap. If your lift has started resting unevenly side to side, that’s often a cylinder issue too, not just a leveling valve problem, so it’s worth having someone check both.

Seal Kits vs. Full Cylinder Replacement

Most scissor lift cylinder repair jobs come down to one decision: reseal the existing barrel or replace the whole cylinder assembly. A seal kit is the right call when the barrel bore is smooth, the rod isn’t scored or bent, and the leak is coming from worn wiper, rod, or piston seals. That’s a straightforward rebuild — pull the cylinder, disassemble it, clean the bore, install new seals in the correct orientation, and reassemble with fresh hydraulic fluid.

Full replacement becomes the better option when the bore itself is scratched or the rod has visible corrosion pitting, because a new seal riding over a damaged surface will fail again in short order — sometimes within days. We’ve also replaced cylinders outright on older Skyjack and other scissor platforms where the labor to pull and rebuild in place cost nearly as much as a factory-spec replacement cylinder, especially on units where the cylinder is buried under the scissor arms and takes real time to access. Cost isn’t the only factor either — if a shop can’t afford lift downtime, sometimes a swap-and-go replacement gets the vehicle bay back online faster than a rebuild that has to be done carefully to avoid a repeat failure.

Common Causes of Cylinder Failure on Scissor Lifts

Contaminated hydraulic fluid is the number one cause we find behind the counter. Dirt, moisture, or metal particles in the oil act like sandpaper on the seals and bore every time the lift cycles, and once that damage starts it accelerates fast. Shops that never change their hydraulic fluid or top it off with whatever’s on the shelf are the ones we see back in our shop most often for scissor lift cylinder repair.

Overloading is another major factor — running a lift consistently near or over its rated capacity puts far more pressure on the cylinder seals than the design intends, and it shows up as premature seal extrusion. Cold weather matters too, especially in Iowa winters, where fluid viscosity changes and moisture condensation inside a cylinder that sits idle overnight can lead to internal corrosion nobody sees until the rod starts scoring the seals from the inside out. Simple neglect — not wiping down exposed rods, letting a small leak run for months, or ignoring a slow drift — turns a five-minute seal check into a full teardown. Most of what causes cylinder failure is preventable with basic maintenance habits.

What a Professional Cylinder Rebuild Involves

A proper rebuild starts with removing the cylinder from the lift entirely rather than trying to service it in place, because you need full access to inspect the bore and rod surface for scoring. Once it’s out, we disassemble it completely, flush the bore, and inspect the chrome plating on the rod under good light — even minor pitting invisible to the naked eye can be felt with a fingernail dragged along the surface.

From there it’s a matter of installing the correct seal kit for that specific cylinder bore diameter and stroke length, since seal kits are not universal across brands or even across model years within the same brand. We reassemble with new hydraulic fluid rated for the application, bleed the system to remove trapped air, and cycle the lift multiple times under no load before ever putting a vehicle back on it. Skipping that cycle-and-test step is how a rebuild that looked fine on the bench ends up leaking again the first week it’s back in service.

DIY Repair vs. Calling a Professional

Some shop owners with decent mechanical skills can handle a basic seal kit swap on a smaller scissor lift cylinder, especially if the cylinder is easily accessible and the bore is in good shape. If you go that route, the seal kit and orientation have to match your exact model, and the cylinder has to be bench-tested before it goes back under a vehicle.

Where we recommend calling a professional is anything involving a bent rod, a scored bore, or a lift that’s under commercial use with liability exposure — a body shop or dealership can’t afford a cylinder failure with a customer’s vehicle in the air. We also get called in when a DIY reseal didn’t fix the drift, which usually means the underlying bore damage was missed the first time around. A second opinion before reassembly saves a second teardown later.

Scissor Lift Cylinder Repair for Different Lift Types

Not every scissor lift cylinder repair looks the same. In-ground and surface-mounted mid-rise scissors used in alignment bays often run a single central cylinder that’s easier to access than the twin-cylinder setups common on full-rise four-scissor platforms, where both cylinders need to be matched in condition or the lift will rack unevenly as it rises.

Portable and low-rise scissor lifts used for tire service or quick-service bays tend to have smaller bore cylinders that see more cycles per day, which means seal wear shows up sooner even though the individual repair is usually quicker and less expensive. Whatever platform you’re running, matching the replacement cylinder or seal kit to the exact model — not just a similar-looking part — is what separates a repair that lasts years from one that’s back on our bench in a few months.
