Shop layout planning multiple bays is one of the most consequential decisions a shop owner makes, and it’s also one of the most commonly rushed. We’ve walked into too many Iowa shops where the lifts were bolted down first and the workflow was figured out later — and by then, technicians are backing cars around columns, air lines are stretched across walkways, and a shop that should hold six vehicles comfortably fits four. Before we talk lift models or bay counts, we ask how cars actually move through the building. Does everything enter through one drive-through door and exit the same way, or do you have a front lane and a back lane? The two-post footprint is narrower and leaves more open floor space around the vehicle, which matters when a bay also needs room for a jack, a parts cart, or a second technician working alongside.

Four-post lifts, by contrast, are self-contained — the vehicle drives up onto runways and there’s no swing-arm reach to plan around, which makes them a good fit for tight side bays or a back row where precision positioning is less critical. Column Spacing and Overhead Clearance

Utility Placement: Power, Air, and Drainage

Every hydraulic lift needs a power drop nearby, every bay needs air for impacts and tire equipment, and if you’re running alignment racks or brake lathes, those have their own utility footprints. We map power and air drops to the finalized lift positions, not the other way around, because moving a conduit run after the concrete is poured costs far more than moving it on a drawing.

Drainage matters too, especially in bays where you’ll be doing fluid work or running a wash-down. Floor drains, trench drains, and even where oil-dry buckets sit all need a place in the plan. Planning for Alignment and Specialty Bays Separately

The same goes for tire bays, detail bays, or any station with specialty equipment like a brake lathe. We’ve found that shops which separate general bays from specialty bays early in the design phase end up with far less rework later.

Sequencing Your Installation Across Multiple Bays

Once the layout is set, the order you install lifts in matters more than most owners expect. If you’re phasing construction — finishing two bays now and two more next year — we plan conduit, anchor points, and floor prep for the full build even if only half the equipment goes in immediately.
