Don’t buy for the vehicle you service occasionally — buy for the heaviest, widest, longest vehicle that comes through your door on a regular week. A general repair shop running mostly sedans and light trucks is fine with a 9,000 to 10,000 lb two-post. Add a diesel pickup, a box truck, or ag equipment to the mix and you need to be looking at 12,000 lb and up, often in a four-post or heavy-duty two-post configuration.
We see shops undersize constantly because the sticker price on a smaller lift looks better on paper. Then a customer rolls in with a one-ton dually or a service body van and the lift is either rated too low to touch it or the arms won’t reach the pick points.
