What Single Phase vs Three Phase Actually Means

Single phase power is what runs through nearly every residential building in Iowa. It’s two hot wires and a neutral, delivering power in one continuous wave. It’s simple, it’s everywhere, and it’s what powers your dryer, your welder, and most home-garage lift motors. Three phase power uses three separate waves offset from each other, which produces smoother, more efficient power delivery to a motor. That’s why nearly all heavy commercial equipment, from big rotary lifts to large air compressors, is built around a three phase motor when it’s available.

The practical difference shows up in torque and startup current. A three phase motor starts smoother and pulls less inrush current for the horsepower it delivers, which matters when you’ve got multiple pieces of equipment on the same panel. Single phase motors work fine for smaller lifts and lighter-duty applications, but as horsepower climbs, three phase becomes the more efficient and more common choice. Which Lifts Actually Need Three Phase

Most two-post and four-post lifts sold for home garages, including the BendPak and Atlas lines we carry, are built around a single phase motor because that’s what’s available in a residential garage. Commercial-grade Rotary and Challenger lifts, especially anything in the heavier capacity ranges, are more often built with three phase motors as standard, with single phase as an upgrade option. If you’re outfitting a dealership service bay or a fleet shop, three phase is usually already run to the building, so it’s the default choice and often the more affordable one since the motor doesn’t need extra components to run efficiently on residential power.

The mistake we see most is a shop owner assuming their building has three phase because it’s a commercial space, then finding out on install day that it doesn’t. Older commercial buildings in small Iowa towns were sometimes wired decades ago for single phase only, especially if they started as a retail space or warehouse. Before you order a lift, check your electrical panel or call your electrician, because ordering the wrong motor configuration means a delayed install and possible restocking costs.

Running Three Phase Equipment on a Single Phase Building

This is where phase converters come in, and where we spend a lot of time on the phone with customers. If your shop only has single phase power but you want a three phase lift, tire machine, or compressor, a rotary phase converter or a variable frequency drive (VFD) can generate usable three phase power from your existing single phase service. Rotary converters are the more common solution for lift motors because they provide steady, reliable power under load. VFDs work well for some applications but aren’t always the right fit for lift motors that need consistent torque during a lift cycle.

Converters add cost and a piece of equipment you have to maintain, so we usually walk customers through the math first: is it cheaper to buy a converter, or to buy the single phase version of the same lift if one’s available? For a two-post or four-post lift, buying the single phase model outright is almost always simpler and less expensive long-term than adding a converter. For larger commercial rotary lifts or in-ground systems, a converter may be the only path if running new service isn’t in the budget. The Cost of Running New Three Phase Service

If you’re building a new shop or doing a major renovation, running three phase service to the building is worth pricing out even if you don’t need it on day one. Utility companies charge based on distance from the nearest three phase line, and in rural parts of Iowa that distance can be substantial, which drives the cost up fast. In towns and denser commercial areas, three phase is often already close enough that running it is a smaller expense. Get a quote from your utility and your electrician before you finalize a lift order, because that number changes the entire equation on single phase vs three phase.

We’ve seen shop owners spend more running new three phase service than they would have spent buying single phase equipment and living with slightly longer cycle times. Voltage Matters Too, Not Just Phase

You can have single phase at 110v, 220v, or 240v, and three phase typically runs at 208v or 480v in commercial settings. A motor built for 480v three phase won’t run correctly on a 208v three phase circuit without a transformer, even though both are technically three phase power.
