Every week someone calls our shop in Ames asking the same question about symmetric vs asymmetric two post lifts, and almost every time the caller is asking about the wrong thing first. They want to know which design is stronger, or which one holds up longer. The honest answer is that both configurations, built by a reputable manufacturer, will outlast the building they’re bolted into. The real decision comes down to your bay dimensions, your ceiling height, the mix of vehicles rolling through your door, and whether you need to open a car door once the vehicle is in the air. What the Two Words Actually Describe

Symmetric means the columns face each other straight across and the four arms are equal length, so the vehicle sits centered between the posts with roughly half its weight ahead of the columns and half behind. Asymmetric means the columns are rotated inward — typically around 30 degrees — and the front arms are shorter than the rear arms. That combination shifts the vehicle rearward in the bay so the door openings clear the posts. It is a small geometric change with a large practical effect.

The confusion in shopping symmetric vs asymmetric two post lifts comes from marketing language. Some manufacturers call a lift asymmetric because the arms are different lengths, even though the columns are square to each other. Others use “versymmetric” to describe a column with multiple carriage positions so one lift can be loaded either way. When we walk a customer through the options, we ignore the label and look at three numbers: the drive-through clearance between the columns, the reach of the front arms, and where the vehicle’s center of gravity ends up. Those numbers tell you how the lift will actually behave with your vehicles. A name on a spec sheet does not.

The Door-Swing Test That Settles Most Arguments

Here’s the demonstration we use in person. Pull a mid-size sedan into a symmetric lift, raise it two feet, and try to open the driver’s door. On a lot of cars you’ll tap the column. Do the same thing on an asymmetric lift and the door swings past the post because the vehicle sits four to six inches farther back. For a technician who gets in and out of a vehicle twenty times a day — resetting a service reminder, pulling codes, checking a window regulator — that difference is worth real money in saved time and saved paint.

That single factor decides the symmetric vs asymmetric two post lifts question for most general repair shops and dealership service lanes we work with in central Iowa. If your work is brakes, suspension, exhaust, and diagnostics on passenger cars and crossovers, asymmetric is usually the right call. Where it gets less obvious is a heavy truck bay or a fleet shop running full-size vans and one-ton pickups. Those vehicles are long, heavy, and often have doors that are already forward of the column no matter how you load them. Where Symmetric Still Wins

Symmetric lifts get dismissed too quickly. Because the load sits centered between the columns, weight distribution is more even and the carriage bearings see less asymmetric loading over years of service. That’s part of why long-bed trucks, dual-rear-wheel pickups, and cargo vans are generally happier on a symmetric setup — the rear overhang doesn’t push the balance point past what the arms were designed for. Body shops love symmetric configurations too, because with the vehicle centered you have equal working room on both sides for panel work, welding, and frame measurement.

The other symmetric advantage is arm reach. Equal-length arms mean the same reach at all four corners, which simplifies life when you’re lifting something with unusual lift-point spacing — a Sprinter, a boxy commercial chassis, a chopped hot rod project. On an asymmetric lift the short front arms are the limiting factor, and on very long-wheelbase vehicles those front arms can run out of reach before you get to a solid pickup point. Bay Width, Ceiling Height, and the Numbers That Kill Deals

The most common reason a lift purchase falls apart isn’t the lift — it’s the building. A two post lift needs 4 inches of properly cured concrete at minimum, and we’ve turned down installs in older Iowa garages where the slab was three inches of 1960s pour over gravel. Ceiling height matters just as much: a clearfloor two post lift with an overhead beam typically wants around 12 feet, while a baseplate model runs the hydraulic lines and equalization cables through the floor plate so it can live under a 10-foot ceiling.

Width is where symmetric vs asymmetric two post lifts really diverges. Because asymmetric columns are rotated inward, the effective drive-through opening is narrower than the overall column spread. Pull a wide dually through that opening and mirrors become a daily hazard. Symmetric columns are square to the drive path, so the opening is wider for the same footprint. Before we quote anything, we ask for three measurements: column-to-column available width, obstruction-free ceiling height under lights and doors, and distance to the nearest wall or overhead door track. Those numbers decide the configuration more often than customer preference does. Shops in Urbandale and around the metro tend to be tighter on width, which pushes many of them one direction before the conversation even starts.

Capacity Tiers and What They Cost You

Both configurations are available across the normal capacity ladder. Ten thousand pounds covers passenger cars, crossovers, half-ton pickups, and most of what a general repair shop sees. Twelve thousand gives you margin for three-quarter-ton trucks and loaded vans. Fifteen thousand and up moves into one-ton duallys and light commercial. Above that you’re into 18,000 to 30,000 pound territory, and at that point the choice is usually made for you — heavy-duty two post lifts are overwhelmingly symmetric because the loads are long and centered loading is the only sane approach.

Price-wise, asymmetric and symmetric models within a brand’s line tend to land in the same range, so budget rarely forces the decision. What does move the number is column style, capacity tier, and arm options — three-stage front arms, telescoping rear arms, drop-in truck adapters. We tell customers to budget for the adapters up front rather than discovering later that their frame-contact truck work needs stackable blocks. The lift is the big-ticket item, but the accessories determine whether it’s actually usable on the vehicles you service. If you’re weighing symmetric vs asymmetric two post lifts on cost alone, you’re comparing the wrong variable.

Installation, Anchoring, and Long-Term Service

Installation differences between the two designs are minor but real. Asymmetric columns have to be set at the correct rotation angle, and if that angle is off, the arms won’t reach lift points cleanly and the vehicle won’t sit where the geometry intends. We shoot the layout, drill for anchors, torque to the manufacturer’s spec, and then run a full cycle test with a loaded vehicle before we hand over the keys. Symmetric layouts are more forgiving to install but less forgiving of sloppy vehicle spotting, since a badly centered load will show up as uneven arm strain.

If you run long-bed trucks, vans, or a body shop where symmetrical working room matters more than door clearance, get a symmetric lift. If your vehicle mix is genuinely split, look at a versymmetric column so you can load either way instead of buying two lifts.
