Why a Two Post Anchor Inspection Comes First

Before we ever touch the arms, cables, or hydraulic system on a two post lift, we look at the anchors. The entire structure is only as good as the bolts holding the columns to the slab. During a two post anchor inspection, we check torque values against manufacturer specs, look for hairline cracks radiating out from the bolt holes, and confirm the concrete itself hasn’t been compromised by moisture, age, or a prior install that used the wrong anchor type for the slab thickness. It’s tempting for shops to assume that if the lift raises and lowers smoothly, the anchors must be fine. That assumption is exactly how we end up getting emergency calls.

Anchors that were fine in their original spot don’t automatically transfer their integrity to a new slab location, especially if the concrete thickness or rebar placement is different. Movement at the base — even a slight wobble you can feel by hand at the top of the column — during a load test is a clear signal that the anchoring needs immediate attention. None of these signs are subtle once you know to look for them, but most shop owners simply haven’t been shown what to check.

Concrete Condition Matters As Much As the Bolts

We generally recommend a full two post anchor inspection at least once a year for shops running lifts in daily commercial use, and more frequently for facilities running heavier vehicles like trucks, vans, or fleet equipment. Home garage users with lighter and less frequent use can often stretch that interval, but we still suggest a check whenever a lift hasn’t been used in a while or after any noticeable impact, like a vehicle bumping a column while driving on.

Beyond the calendar, certain events should trigger an inspection outside the normal schedule. Any time a lift is moved, any time the shop floor undergoes nearby construction or drilling, or any time you notice new cracking near the base plates, it’s worth having someone qualified take a look. We’d rather field a call that turns out to be nothing than have a shop wait until there’s an obvious problem.

What We Do During a Professional Inspection Visit

When our team performs a two post anchor inspection on site, we start with a visual sweep of every base plate and anchor bolt, checking for cracking, corrosion, and gaps between the plate and the floor. From there we torque test each anchor to manufacturer spec, documenting any that don’t hold, and we inspect the concrete itself for signs of spalling or hairline fractures that might not be obvious to an untrained eye.

We finish with a load test, running the lift through a full cycle with an appropriate test vehicle to see how the base behaves under real weight. Common Mistakes We See Shops Make

The most common mistake is simply never scheduling an inspection at all until something visibly fails. The second most common is doing a partial check — someone glances at the anchors, sees no obvious rust, and calls it good without actually torque testing anything. A two post anchor inspection isn’t a five-minute glance; it’s a systematic check of hardware, concrete, and load behavior together.

We also see shops use the wrong replacement anchors when one fails, grabbing whatever hardware is on hand instead of the anchor type specified by the lift manufacturer for that particular slab. Mixing anchor types or using undersized hardware to save time creates a false sense of security that’s arguably worse than doing nothing, because it looks fixed on the surface.
