Why Arm Geometry Matters for Two Post Driveline Service

The biggest variable in two post driveline service isn’t the lift’s capacity rating, it’s how the arms sit once the vehicle is up. Asymmetric two-post lifts shift more weight forward and away from the columns, which opens up the rear of the vehicle for driveshaft removal, but it also changes the vehicle’s balance point compared to a symmetric lift. If you’re pulling full driveshafts on trucks or vans, you want enough clearance behind the lift to walk the shaft out without hitting a wall or another bay’s equipment. Transmission and Transfer Case Considerations

Driveline service frequently overlaps with transmission and transfer case work, especially on four-wheel-drive trucks where the transfer case, driveshafts, and axles are all connected mechanically and sometimes need to come out together. A transmission jack on wheels needs a clear, flat path under the vehicle, which means your two-post lift’s base plates and cross beam need to be positioned so they don’t block the jack’s travel path. We also remind techs to double check that the vehicle is set at a height where the transmission jack’s saddle can actually reach the pan or case without maxing out the jack’s lift range.
