If you’ve ever stood in a garage with a torque wrench in one hand and an installation manual in the other, trying to figure out the right two post lift anchor bolt torque spec, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions we field at Auto Lift Services, whether we’re installing a new Rotary two post in a dealership bay or checking someone else’s install after a lift started rocking. Get the torque spec wrong — too loose or too tight — and you’ve either got a lift that can walk out of the concrete or a bolt that’s been overstressed and can snap under load. Why the Two Post Lift Anchor Bolt Torque Spec Isn’t One Number

The first thing we tell every customer is that there’s no single universal two post lift anchor bolt torque spec that applies to every lift on the market. The correct number depends on the anchor manufacturer, the anchor diameter, the embedment depth, and sometimes the specific lift model’s base plate design. A 3/4-inch wedge anchor from one manufacturer can carry a different torque value than a visually similar 3/4-inch anchor from another brand, because the thread pitch, expansion clip design, and steel grade all vary.

This is why we always pull the torque number from the actual anchor manufacturer’s technical data sheet, not from memory or a generic chart floating around online. Simalube, Powers, Red Head, and other anchor makers publish specific installation torque values for each diameter and length they sell, and those documents also list minimum concrete strength and embedment depth requirements that go hand in hand with the torque number. If we’re re-anchoring a lift with a different anchor brand than the original installer used, we pull fresh documentation rather than assuming the old spec still applies. Iowa shops running older lifts installed decades ago should especially double check this, since the anchor bolt torque spec on file may reference a product that’s been discontinued or reformulated.

Typical Torque Ranges You’ll Actually See

While we won’t tell you to skip the manufacturer’s sheet, it helps to know what ballpark you’re working in. For a common 3/4-inch wedge anchor used on many Rotary and Challenger two post lifts, torque specs often land somewhere in the 60 to 100 ft-lb range, though some designs call for less and some call for more. For 5/8-inch anchors, the range typically runs lower. These numbers are not interchangeable between anchor styles — a sleeve anchor, a wedge anchor, and an epoxy-set threaded rod all have completely different torque and installation methodology, even at the same diameter.

We’ve seen technicians torque anchors to a number they remembered from a different lift install years earlier, and it turned out to be wrong for the anchor actually in the box. That mismatch either under-clamps the base plate, leaving room for movement over thousands of cycles, or it over-torques a wedge anchor to the point where the expansion clip cracks the surrounding concrete instead of seating properly. Either failure mode shows up eventually as a wobbly column or a lift that shifts slightly every time a heavy truck goes up. Reading the actual spec sheet for the anchors in your kit takes five extra minutes and prevents both problems.

Concrete Condition Matters As Much As the Number

Even a perfectly executed two post lift anchor bolt torque spec won’t save an installation if the concrete underneath is wrong. Anchor manufacturers base their torque and pull-out ratings on a minimum concrete compressive strength, usually a few thousand PSI, along with a minimum slab thickness and a minimum age since the pour. Cracked concrete, honeycombed concrete near the surface, or a slab poured within the last few weeks changes the whole equation, no matter what torque wrench reading you hit.

Before we anchor any lift, we check the slab thickness against the lift manufacturer’s foundation requirements and look for existing cracks, expansion joints, or old anchor holes nearby that could compromise the new anchor’s holding power. If we find questionable concrete, we’ll recommend either relocating the lift a few feet, adding a properly engineered pad, or in some cases pouring new concrete before we touch a torque wrench. Torquing an anchor correctly into bad concrete just means you’ve done the wrong thing very precisely — the bolt can still pull out because the concrete itself fails, not the fastener.

Tools That Actually Get You There

A clicker-style or beam-style torque wrench rated for the range you need is non-negotiable for hitting an accurate two post lift anchor bolt torque spec. Impact guns don’t give you a reliable torque reading no matter how experienced the operator is, and guessing by feel is how anchors end up under-torqued. We calibrate our torque wrenches regularly and recommend shop owners do the same if they’re doing their own anchor work, since a wrench that’s drifted out of calibration will give you false confidence in a number that isn’t actually correct.

We also always torque anchors in the sequence and pattern specified by the lift manufacturer, working around the base plate evenly rather than cranking one bolt down fully before moving to the next. Uneven torquing can twist or slightly lift the base plate, throwing off the column’s plumb alignment before the lift ever gets used. It’s a small detail, but it’s part of getting the anchor bolt torque spec to actually translate into a solid, safe installation rather than just a number on paper.

What Happens When Torque Is Skipped or Guessed

We’ve been called out to inspect lifts where anchors were snugged down by hand or with a basic wrench and no torque value was ever verified. In almost every one of those cases, the columns had some detectable play at the base, even if it wasn’t dramatic yet. Left alone, that play gets worse with every cycle as the lift raises and lowers vehicles, and eventually it shows up as a noticeable rock or lean under load, which is a serious safety issue for anyone standing near the vehicle.

Correcting an under-torqued installation isn’t always as simple as just tightening the existing anchors, either. If the anchor has already been sitting loose and the hole has worn slightly oversized from movement, that anchor may need to be abandoned and a new hole drilled nearby rather than retorqued in place. That’s a more expensive fix than doing it right at install, which is exactly why we push customers to nail the torque spec the first time rather than treating it as an afterthought during commissioning.

Re-Torquing and Ongoing Inspection Schedules

A two post lift anchor bolt torque spec isn’t a set-it-and-forget-it number checked only at install. Most manufacturers recommend re-checking anchor torque after the first 30 to 90 days of use, since new anchors and freshly cured or newly loaded concrete can settle slightly as the lift goes through its early duty cycles. After that initial check, anchor torque should be part of routine periodic inspection, especially in high-cycle commercial shops where a lift might run 20 or more cycles a day.
