Why pads fail before the rest of the lift does

A pad is a consumable. It is the only rubber part on the machine that gets crushed under several thousand pounds several times a day, then soaked in brake cleaner, gear oil, road salt, and whatever else drips out of a vehicle in an Iowa February. Rubber does not like solvents. It swells, then it hardens, then it cracks around the edges and starts shedding. On round screw-in pads we often see the steel threaded stud pull loose from the rubber entirely, which is the failure that scares people — the pad stays stuck to the pinch weld while the arm keeps coming down.

The second cause is simple overload of a small contact area. A shop that lifts three-quarter-ton pickups all day on pads sized for passenger cars will chew through rubber in a year. We have walked into shops in central Iowa where the pads were worn so thin that the steel pad cup was making direct contact with the rocker panel, denting body seams on every car that came in. That is not a lift problem, it is a wear-part problem, and it is the cheapest thing on the machine to fix. Inspect pads monthly: look for missing chunks, cracks deeper than a quarter inch, exposed steel, and any pad that no longer sits flat and square on the arm.

The four pad styles you will actually encounter

Most of what we ship falls into four families. Round screw-in pads use a threaded stud that turns into the arm end — common on older Rotary and Challenger two-post units, and the style most likely to separate with age. Slip-on or drop-in pads sit in a machined cup and are retained by a pin, roll pin, or snap ring; these are quick to swap and the ones we recommend keeping spares of. Rectangular or oval polyurethane pads show up on newer asymmetric lifts and hold up better against solvents than natural rubber. Finally there are frame-cradle and truck pads — taller, stepped, sometimes with a slot to straddle a body mount.

Sizing matters more than people expect. Pad diameter, overall height, and stud thread pitch all vary between brands and even between serial ranges of the same model. A pad that is a half inch taller than original changes your minimum arm height, which can mean the arm no longer slides under a lowered car. A pad that is a half inch shorter costs you clearance at the top of the stroke. When customers ask us for a generic replacement, we ask for the model number off the data plate and, if possible, a photo of the arm end with a tape measure across it. Adapters: stacking height without stacking risk

Adapters exist because vehicles are not the same height. Trucks, vans, and body-on-frame SUVs need three to six extra inches to get the frame rail off the arm and clear of the exhaust or running board. Manufacturers supply stackable steel adapters in common increments — often three inch and six inch — plus tall single-piece truck adapters. The rule we repeat constantly: use the manufacturer’s adapters for your lift, do not stack more than the manual permits, and never mix brands to reach a height. Every inch you add raises the vehicle’s center of gravity relative to the arm and reduces the safety factor.

Wood blocks are the thing we argue about most on service calls. We understand why a shop reaches for a 4×4 — it is right there and it is free. But wood splits under point loading, it compresses unevenly, and it does not lock to the arm. We have seen a block walk out from under a rail while a technician was pulling a transmission. If you regularly lift a body-on-frame vehicle, buy the correct truck adapter set for your model and be done with it. How pads and arm restraints work together

People treat pads and restraints as separate systems. They are not. The arm restraint — the gear-and-pin or sliding-latch mechanism at the arm pivot — is what stops the arm from swinging once the vehicle is off the ground. If the restraint is worn, sloppy, or has a broken spring, a pad that is slightly off-center can allow the arm to rotate under load. That combination is behind a large share of the near-misses we hear about.

So when we replace pads on a service call, we always check the restraints in the same visit. Grab the arm at full extension with the lift down and try to swing it: there should be no movement once the restraint engages. Look at the pin teeth for rounding, and at the spring for rust and fatigue. Restraint parts are inexpensive and almost always in stock for Rotary and Challenger. Setting the vehicle: contact points beat guesswork

Correct pad placement is half of lift safety and it costs nothing. Modern unibody cars have designated pinch-weld lift points, usually marked with a notch, arrow, or triangle in the rocker. Body-on-frame trucks lift on the frame rail, not the running board bracket and not the suspension crossmember. EVs and hybrids add a hard constraint: the battery pack tray runs most of the wheelbase, and lifting on the wrong reinforcement can damage a very expensive assembly. Once the pads are set, do the shake test. Raise the vehicle a foot, stop, and push firmly on a fender or bumper. If anything shifts, lower it and reset. Then look at your arms — the front pair and rear pair should be roughly symmetric, with the vehicle’s center of gravity landing just behind the columns on a symmetric lift and centered on the arms of an asymmetric one. Good two post lift arm pads and adapters do not compensate for a poorly positioned car, but bad ones will absolutely turn a marginal setup into a dropped vehicle.

Buying: OEM, aftermarket, and what we stock

We sell both OEM and quality aftermarket. OEM pads and adapters are the safest bet when the geometry is tight or the lift is under warranty, and for Rotary two-post units the factory parts are usually available and reasonably priced. Aftermarket polyurethane pads are a good value for high-volume shops that go through rubber quickly, provided the stud, diameter, and height match the original. Where we push back is on no-name adapters of unknown steel and unknown weld quality — a stack of those under a loaded truck is not a place to save money.

Expect pads to run in the low tens of dollars each for common round and slip-on styles, with truck adapter sets landing in the low-to-mid hundreds depending on capacity and height. Buy pads in sets of four so the stack heights match; a single fresh pad among three worn ones puts the vehicle slightly out of level. When to call us instead of ordering online

Order online when you know your model and you just need consumables. Call us at 800-674-9302 when something does not add up: the pad you received sits proud of the arm cup, the data plate is painted over, the lift is a discontinued model from the 1990s, or you are seeing wear that seems too fast. Uneven pad wear front-to-back usually means the lift is out of level or one carriage is riding low, and no amount of new rubber fixes that. Rapid wear on one arm only often points to habitual off-center loading.
