What the equalizer cables actually do
Plenty of shop owners assume the cables hold the vehicle up. They don’t. On a standard two-post lift, a single hydraulic cylinder (or a pair of them) drives the carriages, and the cables route over sheaves at the top and bottom of the columns to keep both sides synchronized. If the cylinder pushes one carriage up, the cable system drags the other one along with it. That’s it. But “that’s it” matters a lot, because an unsynchronized lift puts the vehicle at an angle, loads the arms unevenly, and stops the safety locks from engaging in matching notches.
The second job those cables do is release the locks. Most designs run a lock-release cable that pulls the latches out of the ladder rack when you lower the lift. When that cable stretches, you get the classic symptom: one side releases and the other side stays hooked, so the carriages ratchet down out of step. Inspecting before you order
Before we quote anything, we want eyes on the cables. Run a shop rag along the length — if it snags, you’ve found broken strands. A single broken wire isn’t automatically a scrap sentence, but a cluster of them, a flattened section, kinks, or rust bleeding out of the core means the cable is done. We also look at the sheaves themselves. A grooved, dry, or seized sheave will chew a brand-new cable in months, and replacing cables without addressing the pulley is money wasted.
Measure the carriage height difference too. Anything more than roughly a quarter inch of mismatch across the full travel tells us the cables have stretched past their adjustment range. Document the model number, serial number, and overall column height while you’re down there — those three pieces of information determine the exact cable length we pull off the shelf, and guessing costs everyone a return trip.
Getting the right parts the first time
This is where most DIY jobs go sideways. Two-post lifts from the same manufacturer can use three or four different cable lengths depending on production year, column height, and whether the unit is a clearfloor or baseplate design. A Rotary SPO10 doesn’t share cables with an SPOA10 across every year, and Challenger revised end fittings mid-production on several models. We won’t ship a set based on “it’s a ten-thousand-pound two post, blue columns.” We need the data plate.
Always replace cables in matched sets. Putting one new cable against one that’s been stretching for eight years guarantees you’ll be back under the lift within the year, chasing the same synchronization problem. We also recommend ordering fresh sheaves, cotter pins, and adjustment nuts at the same time — they’re inexpensive relative to the labor, and there’s nothing worse than having the lift torn down and discovering a snap ring crumbled in your hand. How the two post lift cable replacement job runs
On a typical clearfloor unit, we start by lowering the lift fully, blocking the carriages, and relieving all tension. Then the overhead cover comes off, the old cables come off the anchor studs at both ends, and we thread the new ones over the sheaves following the factory routing diagram — not from memory, because routing varies. Getting a cable crossed or riding outside a sheave flange is the fastest way to destroy a new set on the first cycle.
Tensioning is the part that separates a clean job from a callback. We snug both cables evenly, raise the lift a few feet, and check carriage height on each column with a tape from the floor. Then we adjust, cycle the lift, and check again — usually three or four rounds before both sides land within a sixteenth of an inch. After that we cycle the lift through its full travel several times under no load, confirm both locks click into the same notch, and only then put a vehicle on it. Why we don’t recommend this as a weekend project

There’s also the liability side. Most states, Iowa included, don’t mandate annual lift inspection, but your insurance carrier and ALI’s ANSI/ALI ALOIM standard both expect qualified service on lifting equipment.
