Start With a Clean, Dry Cylinder
You can’t diagnose a leak on a cylinder that’s already covered in grime and old oil. The first step in any real two post lift cylinder leak diagnosis is wiping the entire ram, cylinder body, and every fitting down with a rag and degreaser, then running the lift through a full cycle. This isn’t optional — a wet cylinder tells you nothing about where fluid is actually originating, because gravity carries oil down the shaft and it ends up looking like the seal is the problem even when it isn’t.
Once everything is clean, cycle the lift up and down a few times under load, then stop and look immediately. The rod seal, sometimes called the wiper seal, is the most common failure point we see in the field. It’s the seal that the piston rod slides through every time the lift rises and lowers, and over years of Iowa dust, grit, and temperature swings, it wears down or gets nicked by debris riding in on the rod. A worn rod seal shows up as a thin film of oil on the exposed rod itself, especially near the top of the stroke when the lift is fully raised.
Run your finger along the rod when the lift is up — carefully, since it may still be under pressure. If it comes back oily and there’s no fluid higher up near the cylinder cap, the rod seal is almost always your answer. This is also the cheapest and fastest repair in two post lift cylinder leak diagnosis: a seal kit and a few hours of shop time versus a full cylinder swap. If your lift is more than eight to ten years old and has never had the seals replaced, this is where we’d put our money before looking anywhere else.
Inspect the Rod Itself for Damage

Pitting, scoring, or rust on the chrome-plated rod surface acts like sandpaper on the seal every single cycle, and no amount of seal kit swapping fixes that. Look closely under good light, and run a fingernail across the rod surface at various points along its travel. Any catch, groove, or rough patch means the rod needs to be re-chromed or the cylinder needs to be replaced outright — polishing it out yourself with sandpaper will only make things worse. Iowa winters bring road salt into shops on tires and undercarriages, and that salt is corrosive to exposed chrome rods sitting in a lowered lift overnight. During your inspection, follow the entire hydraulic path from the power unit down to the cylinder base, checking every connection point along the way.
Also check the weld seams at the base of the cylinder itself. This kind of leak is easy to miss because it often looks like it’s coming from the seal above it, when really it’s fluid running down from a lower failure point. If you’ve replaced a rod seal and you’re still seeing oil after the repair, go back and check the base weld and every fitting before assuming the new seal is defective.
Know When a Cylinder Needs Full Replacement
Some leaks are repairable in place, and some aren’t worth chasing. If the cylinder bore itself is scored or the barrel has internal corrosion, no seal kit will hold a lasting fix. Similarly, if you’re on your second or third seal replacement in a short window without solving the leak, that’s usually a sign the rod or bore has damage that needs a full cylinder swap rather than another patch.

Don’t Ignore Contamination in the Reservoir
A leaking cylinder doesn’t just lose fluid — it can also let contaminants in, particularly moisture, which accelerates internal corrosion and seal wear from the inside out.
